Shore Medical Center
Shore Medical Center, formerly Shore Memorial Hospital, is full-service acute care community hospital located in Somers Point, New Jersey, serving Atlantic County and Cape May County.
History
In 1928 Dr. Charles Ernst and Dr. Frank Inksetter built Atlantic Shores Hospital and Sanitarium, a privately owned institution established primarily for the treatment of those with alcohol and drug dependencies. The two-story building had a total of 68 beds.
Atlantic Shores went up for sale in 1939 and was purchased by a group of community members who turned it into a not-for-profit community hospital called Shore Memorial.
The hospital continued to grow over the years. The first building added to the original structure was the Shriver Wing in 1953. Another early addition was the Howard S. Stainton Pavilion, named for the Ocean City businessman who helped found the hospital and served on its Board of Governors. The Frances Pew Hayes Tower was added in 1985, and the CardioVascular Institute and freestanding Cancer Center were opened in 2004.
Today, Shore Medical Center has 296 licensed beds. The hospital employs more than 350 physicians, more than 500 nurses, and another 1,600 employees. Each year, more than 12,000 patients are admitted, 6,000 surgeries are performed, and more than 1,400 babies are born. Shore Medical Center's Emergency Department treats more than 43,000 patients annually.
Centers of Excellence
• Neuroscience Center – Shore Medical Center is accredited as a Primary Stroke Center by the Joint Commission and is also one of only three hospitals nationwide to receive the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for its Lumbar and Cervical Spine Surgery programs. Shore Medical Center has also been designated a Primary Stroke Center by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services.
• Cancer Center – Since 1987, Shore Medical Center's Cancer program has received approval from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer and from the Association of Community Cancer Centers. The Cancer Center is also affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Network.
• CardioVascular Institute – Shore Medical Center's CardioVascular Institute is affiliated with the renowned Penn Cardiac Care Program at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Pennsylvania, thus allowing it to bring university-setting cardiac and vascular services to the community hospital environment.
• Maternity and Pediatrics – Special attention is paid to helping pregnant mothers and new families develop and maintain those early bonds. From pre-natal to pediatric Care, Every resource at Shore is focused on your child’s well-being, comfort and rapid healing.
• Emergency Department – The Emergency Department is staffed with board-certified emergency medicine physicians. The department uses a triage system in tandem with the in-hospital Quick Care Center to ensure that serious injuries are treated first and to minimize waiting time. Shore Medical Center has a rooftop helipad used for emergency airlifting of patients for specialized trauma treatment.

Notable features
• Affiliations – Shore Medical Center is affiliated with Penn Medicine, is a member of the Jefferson Neuroscience Network and has physicians on staff from the Rothman Institute.
• Certifications – Shore Medical Center has received hospital-wide accreditation by the Joint Commission. The Joint Commission has also designated Shore Medical Center as a Primary Stroke Center and awarded the hospital its Gold Seal of Approval for its Lumbar and Cervical Spine Surgery programs.
Future
In 2007, Shore Memorial announced plans for a $125 million expansion project, which included a 135,000-square-foot (12,500 m2) surgical pavilion with new operating and recovery rooms and other support space. Other changes included an improved main hospital entrance, a 27,000-square-foot (2,500 m2) medical office building, and a 1,000-car parking garage with an enclosed pedestrian link. The project was completed in September 2011. On September 7, 2011 the name of the hospital was changed to Shore Medical Center.[1]
