St. Stephens High School is a high school located in Hickory, North Carolina, United States. It is in Catawba County, and is part of the Catawba County School district.
Founding
St. Stephens was formed when Allen Frye, Peace Academy, Lail, Sandy Ridge, and Cloninger combined into one school.
St. Stephens High School first opened in the fall of 1934, with R. N. Hoyle serving as the first teacher and principal. The first school building was used by both high school and elementary school students until 1953, when a new building was provided specifically for the high school students.
Current state
Today the school is rated in the top ten percentile of all schools within the state of North Carolina. As of 2016, the principal is Scottie Houston. St. Stephens enrolls approximately 1,250 students each year.
The elementary schools in the St. Stephens attendance area are St. Stephens, Clyde Campbell, Webb A. Murray, and Snow Creek. Sweetwater Elementary, another feeder school, closed at the end of the 2009 school year. Snow Creek Elementary opened in the 2009-2010 school year. Rising 9th graders come from Harry M. Arndt Middle School.
The school colors are red, black, gray, and white. Their mascot is the American Indian and the school yearbook is The Corona.
