Stephano Barberis (born Stephen Barberis, April 12, in Kitimat, British Columbia)[1][2] is a Canadian music video director. By Autumn of 2013, Barberis has received 25 'Director Of The Year' Awards, including a Leo Award, 14 consecutive BCCMAs and six CCMAs, in addition to 58 'Director Of The Year' nominations, including two MuchMusic MMVA’s.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Background

Barberis is the son of Greek immigrants[4] Alexandre and Dora Barberis,[3] and was born in Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada.[1] He attended Kildala Elementary and then Mount Elizabeth Secondary School in Kitimat,[2] before leaving Kitimat to attend Simon Fraser University to work towards a Bachelor of Arts in urban planning.[2] He then transferred to the British Columbia Institute of Technology.[2] Upon leaving college, he received employment in 1997 to specialize in the creative side of advertising/marketing communications as a marketing assistant with Reallife Pictures, a Vancouver British Columbia film production company.[4]

Career

While working at Reallife Pictures, Barberis directed his first music video production, Get Hot Or Go Home by Rick Tippe,[4] on August 31, 1997. The video went on to become a top 20 hit in Canada (top 3 in requests) on CMT.[4] He later received two MuchMusic Video Awards nominations for a video done for Vancouver electronic deejay K-rec, gaining his work acceptance at MuchMusic, Canada's largest national music video station. He produced music videos for Triton Films in Vancouver, and directed for Aaron Pritchett.[2] In 2005, Barberis and producer Alex Galanis formed Arkadia Pictures Incorporated.[4][7][10]

In 2008 he was referred to as "king of country-music videos" by his repeated wins in the best video category at the British Columbia Country Music Association (BCCMA) and Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) Country Music Awards for 14 years in a row.[11] Works aired through MuchMusic and CMT lead to a string of over 40 national top 20 videos (seven of which hit #1) and 58 nominations for Music Video Director Of The Year or Music Video of the Year,[5] bringing 25 nationwide wins by October 2013.[4] of which include the BCCMA awards for 'Video of the Year' in 2001,[12] 2002,[12] 2003,[12] 2004,[12] 2005,[12] 2006,[12] 2007,[12] and 2008,[12] as well as 'Director of the Year' awards presented by BCCMA in 2004[2] Leo Awards in 2005,[13] BCCMA in 2006,[14] CCMA in 2007,[7][15] CCMA in 2008,[8][16] and CCMA in 2010.

Barberis' music video for Doc Walker’s "If I Fall" became the director's eighth national #1 music video, and the first Canadian #1 of the 2010 decade,[9] and he has won a CCMA for 2010 'Director of the Year' for four of his works.[17]

Barberis also creates electronic music.[4]
