Supreme Dicks is an experimental rock group formed in 1984 by Jon Shere and Stuart Morris while students at Hampshire College. The band produced songs that combined dissonant lo-fi noise, avant-garde, and psychedelic sounds to realize dilapitated and warped song structures.
The primary band members are Jon Shere, Daniel Oxenberg, Mark Hansen, and Steve Shavel. Other members at various times have included John Galvin III, Jim Spring and Dave Taub. The band also has a tradition of inviting others to play with them onstage. Most turn down this invitation. However, some of the musicians who actually took them up on this offer include Beck, Ted Vander Clute, Dan Kapelovitz, and Ariel Pink. The band has toured and performed with Dinosaur Jr., Neutral Milk Hotel, and Bonnie Prince Billy.[1]
The group's latest release is a major retrospective, entitled Breathing and Not Breathing, which was released on the Jagjaguwar label October 18, 2011.[2][3][4]
The band regrouped in 2012 to play a limited number of shows, including three at South by Southwest.[5] They were joined onstage for all of these shows by Holly Cat, who, as a teen Euro-pop sensation, had a hit single, "I Wanna Be Like a Madonna."[6]
