The women's singles tennis tournament at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro was held at the Olympic Tennis Centre in the Barra Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca in the west zone of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 6 to 13 August 2016. The draw for the event was conducted at 11am local time on Thusday, 4 August.
Serena Williams was the defending champion, but she lost in the third round to Elina Svitolina.
Mónica Puig won Puerto Rico's first ever Olympic gold medal, defeating Angelique Kerber in the final, 6–4, 4–6, 6–1.[1]
