The Genuine Fakes is a powerpop band from Stockholm, Sweden.[1] The band was formed in 2005 by singer/songwriter Johan Bergqvist, bassist Mårten Bengtsson and drummer Johan Sundin. In 2007 keyboardist Tommy Wassgren joined.

History

Their debut single, a cover of All I Want for Christmas Is You, was released in December 2009 through Pristine Media Productions/Record Union. The self-titled full length debut, also known as The Striped Album, was released digitally worldwide through Pristine Music on 1 December 2010 and on CD on 17 January 2011 in Sweden. It was subsequently released in the US through Kool Kat Musik, in Japan through Thistime Records and in Spain through Rock Indiana Records. Three singles were picked from the album; I Don't Want It, When Reality Hits You and a cover of Beyoncé's hit Irreplaceable. On 11 November 2011 a mini-album consisting of left-overs from the first album session entitled Liner Notes was released digitally worldwide.[2]

Notable influences are Popsicle, Fountains of Wayne, The Posies, Jellyfish and Cheap Trick.[3]

The band has songs featured on a few compilations. On Beautiful Escape: The songs of The Posies Revisited they contributed their own version of The Posies' song "Somehow Everything",[4] and on Songbox Fan Crusade Vol. 1[5] two originals - "I Don't Want It" and "The Promise" are featured. Most recently their rendition of "All I Want for Christmas" was included on This Christmas Time - a compilation put out in Japan by Thistime Records/Powerpop Academy Distribution.

The Genuine Fakes have toured extensively since they started out. Notable performances include the Peace and Love festival (the largest rock festival in Sweden) in 2009,[6] The Rookie Festival[7] (the most important showcase event in Sweden for indie bands), as well as placing in the finals of rock band competitions Rockkarusellen[8] and Jack Rocks.[9] They also finished in the top 20 of 1600 competitors in the Metro Music Challenge 2008.[10]

The band is currently in the studio working on their second album, due for release in 2012.[11]
