The Mighty John Waynes

The Mighty John Waynes are an American rock band often recognized as the progenitors of a garage punk revival in the Mid West. Founded in 1996 in Indianapolis, Indiana by singer/guitarist’s Jade Gordley and Justin Allen, they released two 7” vinyl records.

Jade "Gooch" Gordley died on June 24, 2015, at the age of 39.

History

The Mighty John Waynes was founded in 1996 by Jade Gordley and Justin Allen. Gordley had been playing in local bands of South Carolina and NYC since 1988, including a rare Christmas set as the guitarist of the Ramones at CBGB. He relocated to Indianapolis, Indiana where he met Allen, who was singing in the punk band Sicko and the Abnormals. They began writing catchy garage punk tunes together and by the year 2000 The Mighty John Wayne’s had dominated the Indianapolis punk scene.[1] As the band began to receive praises under the national spotlight, they were personally hitting rock bottom via death, drug and addiction problems causing them to disband in 2002.[2] TMJW’s reformed in 2011 with an all-star lineup of dedicated musicians, including the two founding members.

Cultural influence

The Mighty John Waynes draws from a variety of influences including 1960s garage rock and 1970s punk. The former bands of TMJW’s members nurtured the growing 1990s garage punk scene of the Mid West and by the turn of the century they were considered the face of original garage punk revival / post-punk revival. The band is credited with influencing many other popular acts including The Slurs & The Jabs. They were voted in Maximumrocknroll’s top ten list several times.

Albums
