The Stringer

The Stringer is a free to read Australian-based online investigative news site and includes feature writing on a variety of topics - including Aboriginal Australia, Aboriginal world politics, politics in general, human rights and the environment.

The Stringer was launched on 20 February 2013 by its founder and producer and principal editor, Jennifer Kaeshagen. "The Stringer" includes contributing editor, Gerry Georgatos.[1] The Stringer has established writers and contributors from around the world, and lists more than 30 contributors and correspondents.[1]

The Stringer has delved into some difficult topics such as the suicides crises among Australia's Indigenous peoples.[2] The Stringer's sustained coverage by Georgatos, (who is also a PhD researcher with academic work in Aboriginal deaths in custody),[3] in addition to his coverage of the suicides crises for The National Indigenous Radio Service[4] and The National Indigenous Times,[5] was able to convince the Chair of the Prime Minister's Indigenous Advisory Council, Warren Mundine to include the suicide crises as part of the Council's mandate.[6][7][8]. Last year Georgatos' coverage on the extensiveness of suicides[9] was responded to by Australian Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs Nigel Scullion and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Suicide Prevention Evaluation Project (ATSISPEP) was launched.[10]

In addition to "The Stringer" news reporting and feature writing, "The Stringer" delves into social justice and human rights campaigns, advocating to the point of securing outcomes.[11][12] "The Stringer" has campaigned for homeless families,[13] and for the funding of "suicide prevention" programs and services.[14] "The Stringer" has multiple campaigns at any one time and is also known for its relationship with Wheelchairs for Kids.[15]

At the September 2013 National Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards, The Stringer won Best Investigative Journalism and The Stringer's contributing editor, Gerry Georgatos, was awarded Journalist of the Year.[16] At the 2014 MIMA, "The Stringer" won Best Editorial Reporting.
