Thomas Edward Gullickson (born 14 August 1950) is an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He has served as the Nuncio to Switzerland and Liechtenstein since 5 September 2015, having been appointed by Pope Francis.
Biography
Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, United States, Thomas Gullickson was ordained to the priesthood for the Diocese of Sioux Falls by Bishop Lambert Hoch on 27 July 1976. He studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, writing his doctoral dissertation in 1985 on The Diocesan Bishop: Moderator and Sponsor of the Ministry of the Word. A Comparative Study of Tridentine Legislation and the 1983 Code of Canon Law.[1] He joined the Vatican's diplomatic service in May 1985 and served in diplomatic missions to Rwanda, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Jerusalem, Israel and Germany.[2]
On 2 October 2004, he was appointed Titular Archbishop of Polymartium by Pope John Paul II. Gullickson received his episcopal consecration on 11 November same year from Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo, with Bishops Robert Carlson and Paul Dudley serving as co-consecrators.
Nuncio to Caribbean states
On 2 October 2004 he was made the Holy See’s liaison with Trinidad and Tobago, Bahamas, Dominica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines - island nations in the Caribbean Sea. On 15 December 2004 he was appointed to other Caribbean islands: Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica, Guyana, Suriname, and Grenada.
Nuncio to Ukraine
Gullickson was named Nuncio to Ukraine on 21 May 2011.[3] He took the place of Archbishop Ivan Jurkovič who was appoined as Nuncio to Russia on 19 February 2011.[4] While there, Gullickson posted on Twitter and on his blog his criticism of Pope Francis regarding family planning, the Eucharist,[5] the Pope's criticism of the papal curia, and the Vatican's relations with Russia.[6][7]
Nuncio to Switzerland and Liechtenstein
Pope Francis appointed Gullickson Nuncio to Switzerland and Liechtenstein on 5 September 2015.[8]
Views on liturgy
Gullickson has frequently written in favor of the traditional form of the mass, with the priest facing East, away from the congregation, as one of the steps to renew what he sees as a proper sense of reverence to the liturgy.[9][10][11]
