Tom Schaar (born September 14, 1999) is an American professional skateboarder[1] He was the youngest skateboarder to successfully land a "900," which is 2.5 revolutions in the air and the first skateboarder to land a "1080," which is three revolutions. He became the youngest X Games gold medalist after completing the first 1080 in a competition at the 2012 Asia X Games in Shanghai;[2][3] youngest Dew Tour champion,[4] and the youngest "Big Air" gold medalist at the Austin X Games.[5] By the age of 15, Schaar was a five-time X Games medalist.[6]

In October 2011, Schaar became the 8th person in history to land a 900.[7]

1080

In 2006, skateboarder and snowboarder Shaun White unsuccessfully attempted the 1080 on 21 occasions at that years X Games and 29 occasions the year before. It had previously been considered the "Holy Grail of skateboarding tricks". At age 6, Schaar had watched White's 2006 attempts from the stands.[8]

In March 2012, at the age of 12, Schaar landed the first 1080 on a skateboard after four previous (unsuccessful) attempts.[9] Schaar commented to ESPN.com, "It was the hardest trick I've ever done, but it was easier than I thought."[10]

At the Asian X Games, he won skate Mini Mega by landing the 1080,[11][12] and became the first to land a 1080 on a skateboard in a competition and the youngest ever to win an X Games gold medal at the age of 12.

On July 5, 2012, he appeared on an episode of Figure It Out, and ended up winning the grand prize. He also appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show for an interview with the host, Ellen DeGeneres.[33]

Personal life

Schaar grew up in Malibu and lives in San Diego, California.[34] When not skateboarding, Schaar likes to surf [14]
