Uashat-Maliotenam (or Innu Takuaikan Uashat Mak Mani-Utenam in Innu-aimun) is an Innu reserve in the Canadian province of Quebec. The reserve consists of two distinct settlements, Uashat and Maliotenam, located near the city of Sept-Îles. In the Canada 2011 Census, Uashat had a population of 1,485[1] and Maliotenam had a population of 1,316.[2] Approximately 700 additional members of the Uashat-Maliotenam band live outside of the communities, predominantly in Sept-Îles.[3]

Although the two communities are not contiguous to each other, being located at opposite ends of Sept-Îles, they are governed as a single political entity. Uashat is located immediately adjacent to the urban core of Sept-Îles, while Maliotenam is located adjacent to the more rural neighbourhood of De Grasse, east of the Sept-Îles Airport. Both communities have road access via Route 138.

Politics

The current chief of Uashat-Maliotenam is Georges-Ernest Grégoire.

The Innu of Uashat-Maliotenam and those of Matimekosh-Lac-John are represented in land claims negotiations by the Corporation Ashuanipi.[3]

Community

Notable people from the community include Michèle Audette, the former president of the Native Women's Association of Canada, Florent Vollant and Claude McKenzie of the musical group Kashtin, and Jonathan Genest-Jourdain, the former federal Member of Parliament for Manicouagan.

A community radio station, CKAU-FM, broadcasts from Maliotenam.
