The team has won eight Olympic gold medals and nine FIBA world championships, and did not lose an international match between 1994 and 2006. However, with longtime leaders Dawn Staley, Lisa Leslie, and Teresa Edwards absent, they lost to Russia in the semifinal of the 2006 world championship, eventually settling for the bronze.
On August 11, 2012, the team won their 5th straight gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, beating France in an 86–50 victory.[1] and on October 5, 2014, beat Spain 77-64 in the final of the 2014 FIBA World Championship for Women for their second consecutive world title.[2]And the same two countries met again at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in mid-August 2016 but the Americans won again for their 6th straight gold, beating them 101-72 to make it 49 straight Olympic basketball victories overall.
