There are 43 universities in Australia: 40 public universities, two international universities, and one private university.[1] The Commonwealth Higher Education Support Act 2003 sets out three groups of Australian higher education providers: universities, other self-accrediting higher education institutions, and state and territory accredited higher education institutions.

- Group of Eight – the leading research-focused universities
- Australian Technology Network – the leading technology-focused universities
- Innovative Research Universities Australia – research-focused universities
- Universitas 21 – a worldwide group of universities founded by the University of Melbourne
- Open Universities Australia – a group of universities that offer distance education courses as part of a common platform
- Regional Universities Network - a group of regional universities
- Sandstone Universities - an unofficial group of Australia's oldest universities
- Verdant universities - an informal group of Australian universities founded in the 1960s and 70s
- Australian-European Network/Utrecht Network - a network of 7 Australian universities and 31 European universities who cooperate on student exchange programs[6]
- Association of Commonwealth Universities - represents 535 universities from 37 Commonwealth countries
Other higher education institutions
Self-accrediting
Like universities, these institutions have the authority to accredit their own qualifications. However, they cannot use the title "University".[7]

State and territory accredited higher education institutions
Like universities, these institutions offer post graduate credentials at the Master's and/or Doctoral level. Unlike universities, however, each qualification offered by these institutions must first be approved by the relevant state or territory authority. The accreditation of these institutions may be verified on the National Register of Higher Education Providers.[8]
