Uthangarai (Tamil: ஊத்தங்கரை) is a Taluk, Town Panchayat in Krishnagiri district in the Tamil Nadu state of India. Also now Uthangarai has been announced as Constituency for State Legislative Assembly Election (from the election to be held on April 13, 2011), with population around 185,000 (approximately). Also it is a Reserved Constituency. This town comprises 185 revenue villages. Uthangarai is bounded by Vellore district in the North and Thiruvannamalai district in the East, Pochampalli taluk in the West and Dharmapuri District in the South. March–June is summer season, July–November is rainy and between December and February winter prevails. Three languages namely Tamil is the native language spoken across the taluk. Major religions are Hindu, Islam and Christianity.
Demographics
As of 2011 India census,[1] Uthangarai had a population of 18,468. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Uthangarai has an average literacy rate of 74%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 81%, and female literacy is 67%.

Railway Stations
- The nearest railway station is at Samalpatti (8 km from Uthangarai), on NH-66 to Krishnagiri. There are two regular passenger trains, one plying between Erode and Jolarpet and the other between Salem and Katpadi. Also a few Express trains like Yercaud express and Bokaro mail do stop here. The nearest railway junction is Jolarpet which is 30 km away from Uthangarai.
Temples Near Uthangarai
- Hanumantheertham: This place is situated on the bank of Pennaiyar at a distance of 10 km from Uthangarai and traditionally associated with Thirthamalai. It is believed that Hanuman who was instructed by Lord Rama to get the water from the Ganges for his penance at Thirthamalai which he could not do it in time. So Rama was said to have done Asthrapryogam and got it. Disappointed at this, Hanuman was said to have thrown down the vessel in which he brought the holy water and this spilled water is believed to be the Hanumantirtha. The water is considered sacred and during the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August) people frequent this spot.

- Sri Perumal Samedha Narayanan Temple: A famous temple situated in Parasuramankottai, 3 km from Uthangarai town which is worshipped as Kulatheivam for many people in the town.

- Nochippatti Pattabhiramar Temple: This place is situated on the mango village (periyakanakkampatti) at a distance of 6 km from Uthangarai. Rescuing Sita from her captivity by killing Ravana in the war, Sri Rama returned to Ayodhya through Danushkodi. His coronation was celebrated in Ayodhya which every one could not have witnessed then. That is the darshan, one can have in Nochipatti. Sri Rama graces with Mother Sita on His right and Lakshmana on the left. Sri Garuda and Sri Anjaneya grace as Dwarapalakas. This is how Sri Rama graced at the time of His coronation in Ayodhya.

Theerthamalai (தீர்த்தமலை)
It is a Hill Temple located about 30 km away from Uthangarai Town on Salem Highway. From Uthangarai, Take a left turn once you reach Hanumantheertham (km - 10). The vehicle can reach till foothills and then its trekking for 4 km to the Hill Temple, which houses Lord Shiva Shrine built 1000 years ago
