Westbrook University

Westbrook University is a small American private, nonsectarian, nonprofit distance-education university located in Weirton, West Virginia.

Founded in 1986,[1] Westbrook offers undergraduate and postgraduate professional degrees in a variety of healthcare science fields to students internationally.[2] It is unrelated to and has distanced itself from AIM-Westbrook University, which is part of the Paris-based World Information Distributed University.[3][4]

Westbrook provides non-residential healthcare science professional higher education to non-traditional students from varied cultural, personal and professional backgrounds and with diverse perspectives. The university's academic program is learner centered and flexible to accommodate mature adult students who may also have family, work and community responsibilities. Individual degree plans are supported by faculty and mentors. All programs seek to cultivate knowledgeable, ethical, skillful and compassionate healthcare and allied health professionals.

Westbrook offers 8 undergraduate and 18 graduate degree programs in psychology and mental health counseling, addiction counseling, holistic nursing, nutrition, naturopathy and integrative medicine.[5][6] The program leading to a doctorate in integrative medicine is open only to physicians, chiropractors and other primary, secondary or tertiary care health professionals seeking to expand their knowledge and expertise.[7] Westbrook also offers Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science, Doctor of Science, Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Naturopathy degrees.

The university may recognize some prior learning, allowing students to earn course credit from professional training, military service, independent studying, massive open online courses and experiences such as community service or volunteer work. Incoming credits must come from regionally accredited colleges or universities, offset a Westbrook course and be verified by an official transcript. Experiential learning is rigorously assessed by appropriate academic or credentialing experts against a given set of standards, competencies or learning outcomes. Recognition of prior learning through incoming credits or through workplace or life experience may not exceed 30 percent of incoming credits toward the student's first degree. Experiential credits may not be applied toward a doctoral degree.[8]

While the university features a flexible curriculum, it requires undergraduate students to complete a liberal-arts program to develop intellectual literacy, critical thinking and communication skills. This core curriculum includes English, mathematics, humanities, fine arts, social sciences, behavioral sciences and laboratory sciences.[9]

Undergraduate and graduate students may design customized and specific courses of study to suit their educational, professional or clinical objectives with integrated or interdisciplinary individualized degree programs generally sponsored by two or more university departments.

Westbrook also offers diploma programs in homeopathy, natural health and other complementary and alternative medicine practices.[10]

The institution additionally provides continuing education units for approved continuing education and professional training programs required for licensed or certified healthcare practitioners and allied health professionals to maintain their credentials.[11]

The university's faculty includes health professionals as well as academics.
