Yahiko jinja (弥彦神社), also known as Iyahiko-jinja is the Japanese Shinto shrine in Yahiko, Niigata. It is located at the eastern base of Mount Yahiko in the middle of Sado Yahiko Quasi-National Park.[1]
History
Yahiko shrine was already well established when a new building was created by Imperial edict in the 8th century.[2] The enshrined kami is
- Ameno-Kaguyama-no-Mikoto (天香山命) who is said to have taught people how to produce salt from seawater.[3]
Yahiko was one of the chief Shinto shrines (ichinomiya) of the old Echigo Province. It serves today as one of the ichinomiya of Niigata Prefecture. [4]
The present shrine was rebuilt in 1916. The earlier shrine buildings were destroyed by a 1912 fire which started in the village.[2]
