Zesch's Militia Battery Kansas Light Artillery was an artillery battery that served in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Service

Almost nothing is known about this unit. It was on duty at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas in October 1864, presumably called into service due to Price's Raid.

Captain Gustovus Zesch. Earlier in the war, he was the Commander of Company I of 1st Kansas Volunteer Infantry. His first action was in the Battle of Wilson's Creek near Springfield, Mo. At the time of the Battle of Westport, his 3 year enlistment was already up and he had been mustered out. There must have been some emergency arrangement for him to command this battery of two pieces. Fort Leavenworth, Kansas was his hometown and it was would be easy to understand that he would want to protect his home and family when the enemy was in force as close as Westport.
