The 2011 Southern Steel season was the fourth season for the Southern Steel in the ANZ Championship. For their 2011 campaign, the Steel gained internationals Paula Griffin and Natasha Chokljat, but were unable to re-sign veteran Megan Dehn. The southern franchise also lost the use of their main home venue during heavy snowfall, and played their home games at alternate venues. Inaugural coach Robyn Broughton continued her role in her fourth year, while Wendy Frew and Liana Leota were appointed as co-captains.[1] At the conclusion of the round-robin matches, the Steel finished in 7th placing, missing out on a finals spot for the first time in three seasons.

Signings and transfers
The final roster for the 2011 Southern Steel was released in September 2010. Among the team's major gains were Silver Ferns shooter Paula Griffin and Australian midcourter Natasha Chokljat. However, the Steel were unable to re-sign fellow Australian and Steel veteran Megan Dehn, after she failed to meet New Zealand residency requirements following changes to ANZ Championship import rules.[2]

Stadium Southland
On 18 September 2010, the Southern Steel's main home venue, Stadium Southland, suffered massive damage during heavy snowfall, which caused the roof over the main court to collapse. Stadium Southland is currently being rebuilt, which is expected to be completed in 2012.[3] For the 2011 season, home games for the Steel were played in the adjoining Invercargill ILT Velodrome and at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin.[4]
