A. Marc Gillinov is a cardiac surgeon and innovator at The Cleveland Clinic [1]

Early life and education

Dr. A. Marc Gillinov was born in Cleveland, Ohio and attended Hawken School, where he was named valedictorian. Dr. Gillinov’s interest in cardio-thoracic surgery began in 1978, after two close family members had heart surgery at The Cleveland Clinic.[2] The successful outcomes of these surgeries inspired him to spend his high school summers working as a researcher and assistant in the cardiac surgery operating suite[3] under Toby Cosgrove, MD, now the Clinic’s CEO and president.[4]

He was accepted into Yale University to pursue his undergraduate degree, where he graduated summa cum laude. After Yale, Dr. Gillinov entered The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he ranked first in his class. He received his clinical and advanced training in general surgery and cardiac and thoracic surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1988.[5] After completing his education and training, he decided to return to Cleveland Clinic and joined the cardiac surgery staff in 1997.[6]

Professional life

Cardiac Surgeon

A. Marc Gillinov, MD, is currently a staff cardiac surgeon at the Sydell and Arnold Miller Family Heart & Vascular Institute at Cleveland Clinic and he is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of Thoracic Surgery. He holds the Judith Dion Pyle Chair in Heart Valve Research at Cleveland Clinic[7] and is principal investigator of The Atrial Fibrillation Innovation Center, a $23 million program funded by the State of Ohio.[8]

Dr. Gillinov has special expertise in minimally invasive cardiac surgery on mitral valve, aortic valve, and tricuspid valve; robotic valve surgery; mitral valve repair; aortic valve replacement; surgical treatment and minimally invasive surgery for atrial fibrillation; off-pump coronary artery bypass surgery and high-risk mitral valve surgery. In addition, he is Surgical Director of the Center for Atrial Fibrillation at Cleveland Clinic.[9]

He has performed approximately 4,330 (average 361/year; through 2009 since at Cleveland Clinic) cardiac surgeries, of which 2,648 (average 221/year; through 2009 since at Cleveland Clinic) involved heart valve procedures.[10] He also performs about 100 robotic procedures annually.[11]

Other medical ventures

Dr. Gillinov is a recognized expert in mitral valve repair surgery and in the study and treatment of atrial fibrillation. He has been instrumental in the development of new, less invasive treatment approaches for mitral valve disease and atrial fibrillation.[12]

He has extensive experience with the development and assessment of new cardiovascular therapies, and is a founder of ClearFlow, Inc., which focuses on development of new, more effective techniques for surgical drainage. He is also co-developer of the left atrial appendage clip, AtriClip Gillinov-Cosgrove Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Exclusion system,[13] a novel medical device designed for open or minimally invasive occlusion of the left atrial appendage.[14]

Dr. Gillinov is a clinical partner for Foundation Medical Partners, a national, independent, healthcare venture capital investment firm.[15]

Notable patients

Dr. Gillinov has performed surgeries on several famous individuals. On March 13, 2009 he performed heart surgery on Robin Williams, in which he replaced his aortic valve, repaired his mitral valve and corrected his irregular heartbeat, a procedure that took over three and a half hours.[16] And on January 7, 2011, he performed double by-pass heart surgery and an aortic valve replacement on legendary Cleveland Cavaliers broadcaster Joe Tait.[17]

Memberships, publications and awards

To his credit are more than 200 publications, eight continuing medical educational films and 19 contributory chapters to medical/surgical textbooks. In addition, he has submitted patent applications for several innovations, including a patent disclosing new techniques for valve repair for which he received a Cleveland Clinic Award for Innovation. He has been instrumental in ushering in a new era in medicine with his contributions to the scientific development of percutaneous approaches to heart valve disease.

Dr. Gillinov has delivered hundreds of invited lectures at hospitals, academic meetings and seminars in the United States and abroad. He is also a member of ten scientific societies, and he has been invited to join the editorial review board or act as an editorial reviewer for 15 scientific periodicals. He is the medical editor of the Cleveland Clinic’s Cardiac Consult and serves on the editorial boards of e-Cleveland Clinic, The Heart Surgery Forum, Innovations, the Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and the Journal of Cardiac Surgery.[18]

Dr. A. Marc Gillinov has been voted as one of the “Best Doctors in 2010” by Cleveland Magazine.[19]

Personal life

Dr. Gillinov divides his time between working at The Cleveland Clinic, spending time with his family and playing tennis.[20]

Dr. Gillinov is the co-author with Dr. Steven Nissen, Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine of the book, Heart 411: The Only Book on Heart Health You'll Ever Need which will be published in February, 2012 by Crown Archetype.
