The Abbottabad University of Science and Technology (also named AUST), is a public university located in Havelian (12 km from Abbottabad), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.^[1] The University offers admissions in Bachelors, Masters, MS/M. Phill and PHD programs.^[2]

History

On June 1, 2005 by Higher Education Department of KPK and regular classes of BBA, MBA and MA (English) were started in two tents with indigenous academic and administrative staff when it was a sub-campus of Hazara University. And in 2008 started Pharmacy department which was a great step at that time,. And now Hazara University Havelian Campus got its own independent status as Abbottabad University of Science & Technology.^[3] ^[4]

Inauguration

Abbottabad University of Science & Technology is inaugurated by provisional minister for higher education and information Mushtaq Ahmed Ghani.

With the passage of time and under the dynamic guidance of the Project Director, this tiny institution will soon attain the status of one of the best university of the country and will spread the light of education not only in this part but also to the whole country. This university is a valuable contribution in the field of education. The aim and object is not only confined to impart education to the young generation but to improve the social and economic conditions of the people of the area. Quaid-i-Azam, the founder of Pakistan fought to create Pakistan where there would be no segregation among its citizens on the basis of cast, creed or language.^[3]

Mission

The mission of the Abbottabad University of Science & Technology is to impart knowledge in the fields of Emerging Sciences & Technology, social sciences as well as liberal arts inculcating the universal values of truth, beauty and goodness among the younger generations, on the one hand, and to provide a befitting research base for contributing original research to the world research pool for the service of mankind, on the other. It further aims at imbuing the students with higher and nobler ideals of Islam and socializing them into well-rounded persons ever ready to serve their own nation, the Ummah and humanity at large.^[5]

The mission of the University, therefore, is to impart education systematically, gradually but surely spreading over centuries. The objective of the University, therefore, is to impart universal education systematically and gradually but surely to the coming generations of students for over indefinitely remote and distant future with Godspeed.

Department of Information Technology

The Department of Information Technology, was established in Fall 2010. The department is offering BCS (Hons) / BS (CS), MCS and BS Software Engineering programs. The graduating students of the department are providing services in various walks of life like atomic energy, space exploration, software houses and government sectors. The Department has its tradition to select the meritorious students and polish their abilities by qualified and expert faculty members. The department also offers Internship to its students to furnish their skills according to the industry/market needs and jobs requirement. Other than academic activities, the following tasks regarding computer services in the whole Campus are also handled by the IT department.^[7]

Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Department of Pharmacy at Abbottabad University of Science and Technology is a prominent department of the campus which owes its eight years history as Department of Pharmacy.

Department offers the programs of PhD, M.Phil and Pharm. D (Doctor of Pharmacy) which is a 5 Years Professional Degree Program designed to develop students’ skills in most important professions in health care system.

In the Department of Pharmacy, study programs,have been designed to fulfill the current needs with regard to professionalism and entrepreneurship.^[8]

Department of Pakistan Studies

Department of Pakistan Studies at Havelian Campus of Hazara University (Now Abbottabad University of Science and Technology) started to function on October 21, 2013 under the leadership of Dr. Sultan Mahmood (PhD in Pakistan Studies from Quaid-i-Azam University Islamabad) as its founding Head of the Department. Pakistan Studies is interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary subject in which different subjects of Social Sciences such as Economics, Sociology, History, Political Science, Languages, Literature, Mass Media and Communication and Public Administration are studied in Pakistani perspective. The main purpose of program is to provide an in-depth understanding of Pakistan through teaching and research about state and society of the country.^[9]

Department of Microbiology

Department of Microbiology was established in 2014 at Havelian Campus under to the Faculty of Health Sciences. The Department of Microbiology Havelian Campus of Hazara University and now in Abbottabad University of Science & Technology is well recognized for teaching and research in Pakistan and is equipped with modern research facilities. The major equipments present are; UV visible Spectrophotometers, Fermenters (Lab Scale and Pilot Scale), Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer, High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography (GC), PCR Machines, Autoclaves, Microscopes, Shaking Incubators, Biological Safety Cabinets, Centrifuges and Incubators etc.^[10]

Department of Mathematics

The department of Mathematics was established in October, 2013 and it is now one of the pioneer department at AUST. The department has excellent connections with many other disciplines within the university and provide services to the entire campus both at under-graduate and graduate levels to enhance the quantitative and mathematical skills of the students. Beside this, the department is currently running BS (Hons) and MSc program in mathematics successfully. The objectives of department are to produce qualified and competent graduates which meet the requirements of a developed and a civilized nation. Having highly qualified experienced and young talented faculty members, the department aims to establish and promote AUST as a leading institution for teaching and research in mathematical sciences both at national and international level.^[11]

Department of English

The department was first created as a sub functionary department of the parent "Department of English Language & Literature" established in 2003 by Hazara University in its Garden Campus situated at Mansehra. Now, the department has recently got its own independent status in 2015 as part of Abbottabad University of Science & Technology (AUST). The "Department of English Language & Literature" has been a center of academic, intellectual and cultural activities since it was founded in 2007 in the Havelian campus of Hazara University. Apart from running its two full-time programs i.e. BS English (four-year) and MA English (two year), the department provides support to all other academic departments of the campus by offering interdisciplinary English courses, e.g. Functional English, Academic Reading & Writing, and Communication Skills, etc.^[12]

Department of Economics

In today’s world Economics is fundamental to every discipline of study! Therefore, Economics, without exaggeration, leads from the front. Economics is not mere a theoretical discipline, indeed it is a practical problem solving entity, essential for pulling the world out of Economic crisis.

A degree in economics gives you the ability to explain complex data in easily understandable terms to different audiences. Our ambition is to produce Economics graduates who are equipped, not only to face the ever changing challenges of modern Economic world, but also to put forward the effective solutions. Economists begin their research on an issue by conducting surveys and collecting data. In some cases, they evaluate historical data. Using statistical and other mathematical methods, economists analyze and interpret the data^[13]

Semester system

There are two semesters in an academic year - Fall and Spring. Each semester consists of 18 weeks of teaching and two exams- mid term and final term. Mid term carries 25% and the final term carries 50% of the total in any subject offered in a semester. The rest of the 25% is awarded on the basis of class participation, assignments and quizzes. Fall semester starts around September–October, whereas spring semester starts around February.
