Akron Ice House
The Ice House is one of the most famous buildings in historic Akron, Ohio. It is the oldest multi-story ice rink in Akron.
History
In its heyday, it was the largest ice cream distribution facility in all of Northeast Ohio. Its location adjacent to the train tracks made it a favorite stop amongst the hobo population in the days after the rubber boom and subsequent bust. In the 1950s, the ice house was owned by “Uncle Cleve”, a black entrepreneur from the segregated south.[1] In the 1960s, it was converted to an ice rink. With three floors of ice, the first rink of its kind, it was able to accommodate hockey, figure skating, and freestyle ice walking simultaneously.
The Ice House currently serves as the home of Troy Myers Studio.[2]
Saw Blade Tower
The Saw Blade Sculpture is the most famous landmark at the Akron Ice House. It was built in the 1930s from the original blades used to cut ice. The rest of the blades were repurposed as the blades for ice skates, which can still be rented today for a small fee.
