Arvind Virmani
Arvind Virmani is an Indian economist who was appointed India's representative to the International Monetary Fund in 2009. Prior to that, he was the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India.[1]
Early life and education
Arvind Virmani attended The Doon School. He later graduated from the St. Stephen's College, Delhi and from California Institute of Technology. He holds a doctorate in economics from Harvard University.[2]
Career
He has been an advisor to the Indian Government at the highest levels, including as Principal Advisor, Planning Commission and Chief Economic Advisor, Ministry of Finance.[3] During his period as the Chief Economic Advisor to the Government of India, Virmani wrote the Economic survey of India (2008-2009). In 2009, he was appointed as India's representative in the International Monetary Fund, a position that is often considered to be a reward for bureaucrats who are coming close to retirement and that has a three-year period of office.[4]
Publications
He published several articles in the areas of Macroeconomics, growth and finance, International trade & Tariffs and International relations.[5] His books include The Sudoku of India’s Growth,[6] From Uni-polar To Tri polar World: Multi-polar Transition Paradox,[7] Propelling India From Socialist Stagnation To Global Power.[8]
