Batang River

This article is about the river in Qinghai and should not be confused with the identically-named Batang or similarly-named Litang River, both in Sichuan.

The Batang (Chinese: 巴塘河, p Batánghé; Tibetan: དཔལ་ཆུ།, w Dpal Chu, z Bä Qu) or Zha Chu (Chinese: 札曲, p Zháqū) is an 88-kilometer (55 mi) long river in the Yushu Tibetan autonomous prefecture in south-eastern Qinghai province in the People's Republic of China. It is located near Batang township (巴塘乡), not the Batang town (巴搪镇) near Litang in Sichuan.

The Batang is a tributary of the Yangtze river system. The main course of the river is the nearby Tongtian, which is traditionally considered to become the Jinsha at its confluence with the Batang. Its watershed covers 2,466 square kilometers (952 sq mi); its average flow is 29 m³ per second.
