Cynarctoides gawnae is an extinct species of Cynarctoides, belonging to the subfamily Borophaginae and tribe Phlaocyonini, a canid which inhabited most of west central North America from the Miocene epoch (Hemingfordian stage) living 23.0—5.3 mya and existed for approximately 17.7 million years.
Taxonomy
Cynarctoides gawnae was named by Xiaoming Wang et al. (1999). Its type locality is Jeep Quarry, which is in a Hemingfordian terrestrial horizon in the Zia Sand Formation of New Mexico.[1]
Morphology
Body mass
Two specimens were examined by Legendre and Roth for body mass.[2]
- Specimen 1 was estimated to weigh 1.02 kg (2.2 lb).
- Specimen 2 was estimated to weigh 1.09 kg (2.4 lb).
Fossil distribution
- Blickomlyus Hill, Zia Sand Formation, Sandoval County, New Mexico ~23.0—5.3 Ma.
- Jeep Quarry, Zia Sand Formation, Sandoval County, New Mexico ~20.6—16.3 Ma.
