Debraj Shome
Debraj Shome is an Indian plastic surgeon.
Shome specialises in facial cosmetic and reconstructive surgery, facial and ocular oncology (cancers), oculoplastic, eyelid and orbital surgery. He is currently the Head of Facial Plastic Surgery, Nova Specialty Surgery, Mumbai, India.[1] In the past, he has contributed in the role of Head of Institute, for Aesthetics and Cosmetic Surgery at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderabad, India.[2] He was earlier associated with Department of Facial Plastic Surgery at Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Mumbai.[3] and at the Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.[4] Shome, the facial plastic surgeon was conferred with prestigious "India’s Most Promising Face in Facial Plastic Surgery Innovations” at Satya Brahma founded Indian Affairs India Leadership Conclave 2015.[5]
Medical education
Shome completed his undergraduate medical education from Grant Medical College and Sir J.J. Group of Hospitals,[6] Mumbai. Post this, he did his specialization in ophthalmology and completed his residency from Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai. He obtained the degrees of F.R.C.S. (Fellow of Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow) in 2003 and also his Diplomate of National Board (D.N.B.) in 2004.[7] Over the years, he has specialised in facial plastic and aesthetic surgery.[8][9] He has also completed his MBA in Healthcare Management from Vanderbilt University, Nashville, TN, USA.[10]
Publications
Dr. Shome has several peer-reviewed national and international publications to his credit. His research efforts include a nanomolecule drug for retinoblastoma treatment.[11][12]
- He is a columnist for the Times of India, Hindustan Times, and DNA – Daily News and Analysis, leading English dailies in India.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19]
Awards and recognition
- Winner of Eye Quest 2006. Eye Quest is the official quiz of the AIOS (All India Ophthalmological Society); held at the annual conference. For this honour, he along with noted cornea surgeon, Dr. Vandana Jain were congratulated by The President of India, His Excellency, The Honourable Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.[20][21]
- Co-author of a paper on Orbital Tuberculosis, which was awarded the 'Best Paper' (Inflammation Session) at the Annual Conference of AIOS, 2006.[7]
- A member of a team of Indian doctors who created a 'nano' version of Carboplatin.[22][23] This won the 'Best Paper' award in Pediatric Ophthalmology session in the AIOS Annual meeting held at Hyderabad when presented as "Periocular Carboplatin in Retinoblastoma with vitreous seeds"[20]
- Reviewer for the Indian Journal of Ophthalmology, the flagship journal of the All India Ophthalmological Society.[24] and 'Ophthalmology' – The American Academy of Ophthalmology flagship Journal.[20]
- Featured as an 'Achiever' by Health Care Express, a leading weekly healthcare publication by the Indian Express group.[25]
- Won the prestigious Hanumantha Reddy and Colonel Rangachari Gold Medal awards at the All India Ophthalmological Society's annual conference in January 2010 held at Kolkata. The paper was based on the development of a novel PMMA carried nano sized molecule of Carboplatin, a chemotherapeutic agent used for neural cancers.[26][27]
- Awarded the Davies Grant Foundation Award by the Royal College of Surgeons, Glasgow. He is the youngest recipient of this prestigious award awarded for his ground-breaking work in oncology.[28]
- Co-Inventor & Patent, along with Dr. Rinky Kapoor, for the QR 678 hair composition, a novel hair invention, which causes hair growth.[29]
- Won the coveted Breakthrough Innovation in Facial Plastic Surgery at Pharma Leaders Power Brand Awards 2015.[30]
Other endeavours
- Dr. Shome started The Esthetic Clinic,[31][32] a chain of aesthetic surgery centres in 2009, along with Dr. Rinky Kapoor.[33] The first center was started in collaboration with the Apollo Hospital group, in Hyderabad, India. Shome is also the co-founder and CEO of Mediangels, a global multi-speciality e-hospital service provider.
