East Village (Des Moines)

The East Village is a commercial and residential neighborhood in central Des Moines, Iowa, United States directly East of Downtown Des Moines. It is bounded by Interstate 235 on the north, the Des Moines River on the west and south,[1] and East 14th Street on the east. The Historic East Village is home to the Iowa State Capitol, State of Iowa Historical Museum, and many buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
History
In 2000, the City of Des Moines slated several buildings in the neighborhood for demolition, however, a group of individuals came together to advocate saving the buildings.[2] Many of the structures stand today as homes to eateries, boutique shops, and loft-style housing.[3]

- Municipal Building
- Northwestern Hotel
- Syndicate Block
- Teachout Building
The neighborhood includes the Iowa State Capitol and other state government buildings to the east and several city government buildings to the west.
