Eglė Špokaitė (born 1971 in Vilnius) is a Lithuanian ballet dancer, prima ballerina of the Lithuanian National Opera and ballet theater (1989–2011). Founder and artistic director of "Ballet Institute of San Diego" in US.[1] as wells as co-founder and artistic director of "Egle Spokaite Ballet School"in Vilnius, Lithuania.[2] Actress, choreographer and public speaker. Winner of the Lithuanian National Prize, as well as other numerous awards and honors. Lives and works between Vilnius and San Diego

Biography

Eglė Špokaitė was born in 1971 in Vilnius. After graduating from Vilnius School of Ballet in 1989 became the soloist of the Lithuanian National Opera and ballet theater. Between 1994 and 1996 became a winner of four international ballet competitions. During her career between 1989 and 2011 Eglė Špokaitė performed leading roles at the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater.[3] She worked with the Lithuanian masters of International caliber: L.Shulga, Jonas Katakinas. Performed classical roles with leading Russian ballet educators Ninel Kurgapkina, Kseniya Ter-Stepanova. Eglė collaborated with the most prominent of art figures: Mstislav Rostropovich,[4] Maya Pliseckaya,[5][6] Gidon Kremer, Eimuntas Nekrosius.[7] She performed under the direction of choreographers Giorgi Aleksidze, Krzysztof Pastor,[8] Boris Eifman, Alexei Ratmansky, Gerald Arpino, Alla Sigalova,[9] E.Vicichovska, K.Simonov. As a visiting artist created major roles in Georgian National Opera, Latvian National Opera, Finish National Opera, Karellian Music Theater. In 2009 along with business partner Kristina Sliesoraitiene established ballet School, that today carries the name of "Egle Spokaite Ballet School".[10] Egle also remains the artistic director of the school, which now counts more than 700 students and is the largest private ballet school in the Baltic region. In 2011 Egle Spokaite left the stage of Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theater. March 2015 marked her debut as a choreographer: ballet "The Blue Danube" premiered at Kaunas National Musical Theater, choreographed and libretto edited by Egle.[11] At the time of expansion of her ballet school, Egle also co-founded the international "Vilnius Youth Ballet Competition" [12] in 2015, dedicated to discovering the young talents from around Europe. Over 200 soloists ages 6-12 from several countries competed in the 2016 competition.[13]

In 2016 Egle Spokaite established the "Ballet Institute of San Diego", dedicated to quality ballet Instruction.[1]

Eglė Špokaitė is married to scientist and photographer Dainius Macikenas[35] and lives between San Diego, US and Vilnius, Lithuania.[36]
