Glover Freeman Quin Jr.[1] (born January 15, 1986) is an American football safety for the Detroit Lions of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at New Mexico and Southwest Mississippi Community College, and was drafted by the Houston Texans in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft.
High school
A four year letterman in football and basketball, Quin graduated from North Pike High School in 2004. During his senior year, Quin received the MVP award from both his basketball and football team at North Pike HS. By the end of his high school career, Quin had rushed for 2,552 yards, made 224 tackles and 13 interceptions. Quin was awarded the U.S. Army Scholar Athlete Award.[2]
College career
Quin transferred into the University of New Mexico after spending a year at Southwest Mississippi Community College. Glover Quin was a three year starter at the cornerback position for the University of New Mexico.
In 2006, Quin received an Honorable Mention on the All Mountain West Conference (MWC), team as a sophomore. During the season Quin started 13 games for the Lobos. Quin led the MWC with 12 pass break-ups and was second in the league, behind his teammate DeAndre Wright in passes defended with 12. Glover Quin was 3rd on the Lobos and 29th in the MWC with 63 tackles on the year.
During his junior season in 2007, Quin again received Honorable Mention on the All Mountain West Conference Team. Early in the season, Quin suffered a painful groin injury that required surgery. Upon his return, the Lobos' defense improved its allowed passing yardage from 255.6 yards in its first 5 games down to 161 yards in its final 8 games. Quin tied for 3rd in the MWC with 10 passes defended.
In 2008, during his senior season, Quin was selected as a first team All Mountain West Conference player. Quin had a remarkable season that ended with him missing only 5 tackles throughout the season. He was voted team MVP by his teammates; an honor that had not gone to a defensive player for the school since Brian Urlacher was given the honor in 1999. Quin became the first cornerback in Lobos' history to win the award.[2]
Professional career
Houston Texans
Quin was drafted in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Houston Texans. Quin made his NFL debut with the Texans against the New York Jets on September 13, 2009. During his debut game he entered the game as a nickel cornerback and also played on special teams.
On October 4, 2009, Quin started his first NFL game versus the Oakland Raiders. Quin started the next six consecutive games for the Texans through November 8, 2009.[3]
Quin played in 15 of the Texans' 16 games during the 2009 season.[4]
Quin finished out the 2009 season with 56 total tackles.[5]
Quin started at cornerback for the Texans in their first game of the regular season on September 12, 2010 versus the Colts. During his first game of the season Quin recorded an impressive 4 tackles (3 solo tackles) and a fumble recovery.
On November 28, 2010 versus the Tennessee Titans, Quin had a breakout performance. Quin set a franchise record with 3 interceptions, which were also his first 3 interceptions as a professional, while adding 4 tackles (3 solo), and 5 passes defensed. For his outstanding performance against the Titans, Quin was named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week.[6]
Quin finished out the season with 71 total tackles and 3 interceptions.[5]
Detroit Lions
On March 13, 2013, Quin signed with the Detroit Lions.[7]
In his second season with the Detroit Lions, Quin led the team and NFL with 7 interceptions.[8] In 2015, Glover was voted by fans, players and coaches to the 2015 NFL Pro Bowl team. He was also awarded 2nd Team All-Pro honors for his play during the 2014/2015 season.[9]
