Haagalavaadi (ಹಾಗಲವಾಡಿ, हागलवाडि) is a town in Tumkur District[1] of Karnataka, India. It belongs to Bangalore Division. It is located 50 km away from the district headquarter Tumkur(via TCB Road). Bangalore is the nearest Metropolitan Area to Hagalavadi which is located 120 km from Hagalavadi (to the southeast).[2]

Etymology or Word Origin

Hagalavadi has the longest history in Tumkur District. The name Hagalavadi came from this history itself. Hagalavadi (Agalavadi=old using) "Agala" means "wide"(agalavada in Kannada language), vadi or wadi means "Group" or, "Group of People"(The Nayakas and Palegars in this case) living in an area. Today's name Hagalavadi gradually shifted from old using Agalavadi (agalavada maha samsthana).

History

The founder of this dynasty was Erimada Nayaka succeeded by Sali Nayaka (late 15th century) who largely expanded the territory. Hagalavadi is also headquarter to the palegar lines. The town Chikkanayakanahalli was founded by Erimada Nayaka and named after his brother as Chikkanayaka.

Hagalavadi Dynasty's Chiefs

The Hagalvadi chiefs ruled for about 300 years from 1478 to 1776. The founder of the dynasty, Erimada Nayaka, was succeeded by Sali Nayaka (1508-1544) who largely expanded the territory. Inscription Ck 38 dated 1696 relates to them. Sali Nayaka, who captured Kandikere and Settikere and other places, assisted the Penukonda army with a force, on condition of being confirmed in his conquests and when that army was defeated, escaped to his own capital with such plunder as he could secure. Chiknayakanahalli was founded and named after his brother, and Honnavalli, Turuvekere and Nonavinakere were added to the possessions. It was on the completion of these enterprises that he is said to have taken the name of Sali Nayaka from the idea that his conquests extended in a ‘Salu’ or line. His grandson, Mudiyappa Nayaka I, also considerably extended the territory. Mudiyappa Nayaka II, who was the ninth in the line, had been hailed as a Rajarishi for his benign rule; later, he gave up the throne and engaged himself in spiritual pursuits. His son, Mudduveerappa Nayaka (1740-1753), successfully resisted the onslaughts of Salabat Jung and Dilwar Khan and was called ‘Jung Bahadur’. Channabasappa Nayaka, the twelfth ruler in the line, was imprisoned by Haidar Ali at Srirangapattana. The Nayaka died in prison the territory was annexed by Haidar Ali. According to M. S. Puttanna (‘Hagalavadi Palayagararu’ 1931), theHagalvadi State had once covered more than three – fourths of the present district of Tumkur.So many Religious monasteries originated here during 15th to 17th centuries AD, among them Mudduveeraswamy and Muddiyappa Nayakas are still famous and their name is still in every local people's mouths. Hagalavadi has the longest history on TCB Road and its territory was wider, the chiefs of this dynasty built many forts, temples and many Monasteries, the old monuments are still exist in the town today.

Hagalavadi is currently one of the fastest growing economy in Tumkur District. Some people are ultramodern and commercialised and some are still less commercialised . This rapid developing town is changing day by day as a commercial hub. Mainly careless patronage of many worst politicians and people's representatives who are electing continuously made this town ill development and backward intentionally. Primarily the proper Infrastructure, water facilities, and road connectivity (the most wanted now) are still fundamental problems.

Tumkur-Chelur-Hagalavadi/Bukkapatna Road(TCB Road) or Bangalore-Hagalavadi-Hosadurga Road

The TCB Road (also known as the Tumkur–Hagalavadi Main Road or ತುಮಕೂರು-ಹಾಗಲವಾಡಿ ಮುಖ್ಯ ರಸ್ತೆ) is a major district road in Tumakuru, Karnataka, India(This Road is in the list of State Highway of Karnataka, soon it will become State Highway). It begins at a junction with National Highway 206 (NH 206) at Bheemasandra(TCB Circle in Tumkur City). The Road passes through Bellavi, to the junction with State Highway 84 (SH 84, Mayasandra-Sira) in Chelur. And goes towards northwest to a junction with NH 234 in Bukkapatna via Hagalavadi Town.[2] The TCB Road lies in four hoblis (Bellavi hobli,Cheluru hobli,Hagalavadi hobli,Bukkapatna hobli) and three taluks(Tumkur taluk,Gubbi taluk and Sira taluk) of Tumkur District .The total length of the road is 62 km from Bukkapatna to Bheemasandra(TCB Circle or the junction of NH 206) and 66 km from Bukkapatna to Tumkur Town Hall Circle or Tumkur City Bus stops(KSRTC and Private).The highest length of this road lies in Hagalavadi hobli area(25 km-from Arehalli to Shivarampura via Hosakere and Hagalavadi)

History of the road

The Palegars and Nayakas(Hagalavadi Chiefs) constructed what became the modern-day TCB road for their connection with different Kingdoms. The Palegars and Nayakas(Chiefs) expanded their territory as wide as the region such as Tumakuru, Sira, Chikkanayakanahalli,Turuvekere, Settikere, Nonavinakere and Nittur. They connected to the Chitradurga Nayakas, Mysore Vodeyars and Haider Ali through this mud road.The Road gradually became commercial and modern.The 16-17th century religious renaissance in this area led to the construction of many monasteries in Hagalavadi Town and religious people would travel from faraway locations to meet Hagalavadi Mudduveeraswamy-1 via the TCB road.The Road is now in the list of upgrading from MDR to State Highway(SH with number) status of Karnataka.The traffic is increasing day by day between Tumkur-Hagalavadi and this road is also in the proposal of Bangalore-Hagalavadi-Hosadurga Express way.

Traffic and transportation

Traffic on the TCB road is busy between Tumkur and Hagalavadi. But it is lesser in between Hagalavadi and Bukkapatna Road stretch. There are innumber of Private buses to every 15–30 minutes between Tumkur and Hagalavadi. There are also private buses to every 1 hour between Nittur and Hagalavadi. There are private buses to every 1–30 hours between Sira and Hagalavadi. Hagalavadi is an important central town towards Sira, Bukkapatna, Huliyar, C. N Halli, Nittur, Tumkur and Bangalore. The road connects all the people to Bangalore Metropolitan area via the NH 206 and NH 4(India) or Asian Highway 47.[2] There are many ordinary KSRTC buses that are also operating on this route but they are less in numbers, as they are operating now between Tumkur-Hagalavadi only.

The Road Stretch of Bangalore-Hagalavadi-Hosadurga Main Road

The Road from the junction of NH 206, that is TCB Circle in Bheemasandra(Tumkur) to Ganeshapura Village (near Hagalavadi Town), the tarred road is 16.50 feet(5.50 Metre) width. But the stretch from Ganeshapura Village to Bukkapatna (the junction of NH 234) is 9.50 feet(3.50 Metre) width.That portion of tarred road work is still become a delay process. The road has many pits and potholes during the rainy season every year(Particularly Hagalavadi-Bukkapatna stretch). The portion of the road from Tumakuru to Hagalavadi is in good condition always. But the stretch from Hagalavadi to Bukkapatna the Road is not properly maintained by the Karnataka Public Works Department and people's representatives.

Future plans and proposals to Bangalore-Hagalavadi-Hosadurga Express Way

The establishment of an expressway Bangalore-Hagalavadi-Hosdurga via TCB Road will increase frequency and reduce travelling hours between primary destinations. Although now many private owners(Private buses) still operating many buses on this route. They failed to satisfy the travellers of Hagalavadi/Bukkapatna. There is a proposal from the local people to Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation will operate express buses between Bangalore-Hagalavadi-Hosadurga to reduce travelling time. But the current state of the road prevents them from doing so. The Tumakuru or Bangalore division KSRTC has complained about the road stretch between Hagalavadi and Bukkapatna(Incomplete Road Stretch). Tumkur Division KSRTC currently operates ordinary buses up to Hagalavadi Town.The Public grievance of this area people is to the launch of expressway corridor between Bangalore-Hagalavadi-Bukkapatna-Hosadurga expressway, and proposing always Bangalore to Hagalavadi-Hosadurga Express KSRTC Buses.

TCH or Tiptur-CN Halli-Hagalavadi Road is an MDR that covers almost three taluks (Tipur, CN Halli and Gubbi) in Tumkur District, Karnataka, India. It starts at the junction of NH 206 in Tiptur rural,Tiptur. The road passes through the village of Settikere to the town of Chikkanayakanahalli.The Road here in Town of CN Halli crosses the junction NH 150A. And goes towards northeast to the junction of TCB Road (Tumkur-Chelur-Bukkapatna Road) in Hagalavadi Town.

The New Road infrastructure between Chikkanayakanahalli-Hagalavadi Cross(a junction near Hagalavadi Town) is 16.50 feet(5.50) width is now open to public to facilitate and reduce trvelling time of the travellers between chikkanayakanahalli and Hagalavadi.The Road also connects Tumkur to Chikkanayakanahalli via Hagalavadi Cross. Currently many private buses' owners operating Tumkur to Chikkanayakanahalli through Hagalavadi.The corridor is now reduce the travelling hour between Chikkanayakanahalli-Hagalavadi.

The Incomplete Road Stretch from near Singadahalli lake to Hagalavadi Main Circle

Basically Hagalavadi-Chikkanayakanahalli Road was constructed by Hagalavadi Kingdom's Chiefs. There is a Road from Hagalavadi Main Circle to Chikkanayakanahalli's Nehru Circle.(actually this is the direct road via Galigekere) This direct corridor is misused and make their advantage from a few people's or minor population's comfort to build the Road from CN Halli to Hagalavadi Cross. This Road divided near Singadahalli Lake(this is the Y shape junction, one Road is to Hagalavadi Main Circle and the another road is to Hagalavadi Cross). This CN Halli to Hagalavadi Direct connected road has a worst incomplete stretch between Singadahalli Lake to Hagalavadi Circle via Galigekere, has pits and pothols from 20 years. The Karnataka Public Works Department is totally ignored this road. There are many Private and Goods carriages travelling to connect Hagalavadi main Town. The people's representatives also ignored this road stretch from long years.

Hagalavadi-Nittur Road

Hagalavadi-Nittur Road is a Major District Road in Gubbi Taluk,Tumkur District, Karnataka, India.The Road is complete in the area of Gubbi taluk.The Road starts at the junction of NH 206 in Yallapura Gate, three km away from Nittur main Town.The Road goes toward the north direction via villages like Kallahalli, Haradagere(Kallardardagere), Appannanahalli, Hagalvadi Cross(Kaimara), Shivapura and Hagalavadi. In the small village Kaimara(It is also known as Hagalavadi Cross because it is one of the important junction of Hagalavadi Town) the Hagalavadi-Nittur Road merges with TCB Road until Hagalavadi Town. It will also goes towards Bukkapatna.The Road ends with TCB Road Hagalavadi.The distance of Hagalavadi to Nittur is 30 km away via Hagalavadi-Nittur Road.

Hagalavadi Bypass or Shivapura-Yakkalakatte Road

The distance between Tumkur to Hagalavadi is 50 km in the present day structure of the Road.But if we consider and travel via Hagalavadi Bypass Road or via Yakkalakatte village,the distance will reduce to 3–4 km between Tumkur-Hagalavadi.The distance will be 45 km from Tumkur to Hagalavadi via Hagalavadi Bypass Road.The only problem with the Road now is the lack of two bridges across Marehalla Stream.One is in near Shivapura Town and another is in near the Yakkalakatte Bus Stop(The Junction of TCB Road).The only reason of the plenty of people travelling between Tumkur to Hagalavadi daily.Travellers fed up with the travelling time with the present day unnecessary deviation towards Kaimara junction.That's why the future 18 feet width (6 metre width) expressway corridor should construct viaThe Hagalavadi Bypass Road or Shivapura-Yakkalakatte Road. This will increase the frequency between Tumkur-Hagalavadi.

Hagalavadi Kariyamma Temple and Goddess(Venus or Aphrodite)

The Heart and the Soul of the Hagalavadi town is Kariyamma Temple and Devi. It is known particularly for the Goddess' beauty (Aphrodite or Venus) is called Hagalavadi Kariyamma Devi. The Goddess is also called as the "Goddess of beauty"(Aphrodite) for its prettiness. Innumber of Devotees come from far away places to visit the Goddess many times in a year. There is a special non veg meal in every Tuesday and Friday made by many worshippers to the fulfillment of their Harakes. The Kariyamma Devi Administration office is conducting the annual A Week Fair every year in the month of March. This Fair attracts thousands of people along with Bangalore to Bukkapatna Road. And also this Temple hold the main financial status in the town and the temple has its own hectares of land and many shopping complexes which become demanduous now. The temple contributing more and more to the Hagalavadi's thriving economy.

Hagalavadi is surrounded by 'The Hill of the Hagalavadi' and it lies beside the Hunasehalla Basin along with TCB Road between Hagalavadi-Bukkapatna.Hagalavadi Lake is beside the town to make the town beautiful when full. The chief producers of this area is coconut and arecanuts. Hagalavadi Town is surrounded by many arecanut and coconut plantations. Hagalavadi has a big Coconut and Vegetable market every Friday and it is growing day by day from its coconut transactions.

Education

Many Primary Schools, High School and PU colleges are in the town. Mamathashri Higher Primary School is a government-aided institution which is providing good English medium educational facilities to students. The Government Higher Primary School is also very good, which is also providing sanscrit education to primary level. The popular Hagalavadi Sri Vinayaka institutes educating the students in High School and Sri Vinayaka PU college. The Vinayakas are most famous to this area people from dacade to dacade for the quality of education and particularly for its very good and efficient teaching Faculties. Majority of Hagalavadi's youths are educated here. The surrounding rural areas(From Barasidlahalli, Madanamadu, Galigekere, Shivarampura, Madenahalli, Ramalingapura, Hagalavadi Cross or Kaimara, Appannanahalli, Yakkalakatte, Ganeshapura and Obalapura) are highly depend on these institutions. There is a proposal from long days to the Government or Department of Collegiate Education for the establishment of a degree college in Hagalavadi, but still it become a delay possess. Now the Hagalavadi region students inevitably depend on Gubbi and Tumkur Cities for the degree and PG studies in different disciplines. There are innumber of students travelling between Gubbi-Hagalavadi and Tumkur-Hagalavadi now.

Hagalavadi-Shivapura Twin Towns

There is no separation between the towns of Hagalavadi and Shivapura. Many houses and education instititions, KEB office, brick industries and farm houses are rising day by day. Today they have merged as one urban area of this region though they have separate village councils (Hagalavadi Village Council and Shivapura Village Council). The popular institution Mamathashri Higher Primary School,Hagalavadi is located between the twins towns. Shivapura Bus Station is the starting point of the twin town urban area.The last bus stop is the Bukkapatna Gate Bus Stop on TCB Road.
