Joshua Joseph Brian "Josh" McQuoid (born 15 December 1989) is a Northern Irish professional footballer who plays as a striker or winger for League Two club Luton Town.

Club career

Bournemouth

McQuoid played for Sway Juniors alongside future team-mate Sam Vokes,[3] and began his youth career proper at the Southampton Academy, but was released aged 13.[4] McQuoid then joined Bournemouth's youth set-up, coming through the ranks to make his senior debut in May 2007 against Doncaster Rovers as a substitute for Brett Pitman.[5] He made five appearances in the 2007–08 season, signing his first professional contract with the club in May 2008.[6]

After playing in pre-season friendlies ahead of the 2008–09 season, in which Bournemouth would begin with a 17-point deduction for financial irregularities, McQuoid became a regular feature in the squad – mainly as a substitute.[7] He provided an assist for Brett Pitman in a 3–1 win over Darlington for the Cherries first win of the season on 27 September 2008.[8] Manager Eddie Howe played McQuoid in 19 games as the club avoided relegation, despite their points deduction, to retain their League Two status for the next season.[9]

McQuoid featured more regularly in the 2009–10 season, though not until injuries to other squad members in the second half of the campaign paved the way to a regular starting slot.[10] He scored his first senior goal during a 4–0 win over Port Vale on 1 May 2010 to help the club win promotion to League One.[11] Bournemouth secured second place in League Two despite a 2–1 defeat by Chesterfield on the final day of the season.[12] At the end of the season, McQuoid was offered a new one-year contract by the club, which he signed on 19 May 2010.[13][14]

In the 2010–11 season, the departure of Brett Pitman and injuries to other forward players meant McQuoid adopted the role of striker rather than his prior position as a winger, and he went on to score five goals in his first five games.[15] McQuoid's goalscoring form led the club's supporters to compare him to Pitman, though manager Howe played down the claim.[16] In November 2010, McQuoid scored hat-tricks in consecutive games. The first came against Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup;[17] the second a week later in the league against bottom-of-the-table Walsall.[18] McQuoid scored his last goal of the season for Bournemouth when they beat Yeovil Town 2–0 on 23 November 2010.[19] His performance even caught the eye of veteran striker and Bournemouth icon Steve Fletcher, quoting: "It’s not just about him scoring goals – he’s got pace, good feet, skill, ability, good energy levels and he’s good in the air. There’s not a lot he hasn’t got. He’s never going to be a big bruiser but he doesn’t want to be because that would take away from all the other attributes he’s got."[20]

Millwall

Despite his willingness to begin talks with Bournemouth over a new contract,[21] McQuoid instead signed for Championship side Millwall on loan on 25 November 2010, with a view to a permanent move taking place in the January transfer window.[22] Eddie Howe later stated that McQuoid's departure had a negative impact on the squad's confidence.[23]

McQuoid made his Millwall debut as a substitute for Calvin Andrew in a 3–0 win over Scunthorpe United on 4 December 2010.[24] He then provided an assist for Jason Puncheon, who later scored a hat-trick, in a 3–0 win over rivals Crystal Palace.[25] McQuoid completed his permanent move four days later on 5 January 2011 for a fee believed[26] to be worth approximately £550,000.[27] However, weeks after joining the club permanently, McQuoid tore a ligament in his ankle during training.[28] After three months on the sidelines, McQuoid made his return in a 3–2 win over Leeds United on 9 April 2011.[29] McQuoid scored his first goal for Millwall, a 30-yard hit into the top corner, in a 4–0 victory over Preston North End two weeks later.[30]

The 2011–12 season saw McQuoid under pressure from Millwall supporters after a goalless start to his campaign.[31] After spending the first half of the season sidelined by injuries and poor form, McQuoid joined Burnley on a three-month loan on 20 January 2012, linking back up with his former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe.[32] McQuoid made his Burnley debut in a 0–0 draw against Derby County on 21 January 2012.[33] He then provided a double assist, in a 5–1 win over Portsmouth, on 31 March 2012.[34] McQuoid scored his first and only goal for Burnley on 9 April 2012 against Doncaster in a 2–1 win.[35] On 24 April 2012, McQuoid's loan spell with Burnley came to an end after 17 appearances and he subsequently returned to Millwall.[36] McQuoid later stated that his move to Millwall did not work out as expected, admitting that he joined the club both to test himself at Championship level and the opportunity to earn more money.[37]

Bournemouth return

McQuoid rejoined Bournemouth on 30 May 2012 on a three-year contract in a swap deal, with Scott Malone joining Millwall in the process.[38] McQuoid admitted he was motivated to return due to the opportunity to play first-team football.[39]

McQuoid injured his right heel during pre-season ahead of the 2012–13 season, which kept him out for three weeks.[40] McQuoid made his return on 1 September 2012, coming on as a substitute for Joe Partington in a 5–3 loss against Sheffield United.[41] It took until 23 October 2012 for McQuoid to score on his return, doing so in a 3–3 draw against Notts County.[42] Two weeks later, he scored a brace in the first round of the FA Cup in a 4–0 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.[43] Three days later, he scored his fourth goal of the season in a 2–1 win over Shrewsbury Town.[44] However, as the season progressed, McQuoid found his first-team opportunities more limited, though still played a part in helping the club obtain promoted to the Championship.

At the start of the 2013–14 season, McQuoid damaged his right knee during a pre-season training session that kept him out for five months.[45] McQuoid made his first and only Bournemouth appearance of the season in a 1–1 draw against Ipswich Town on 29 December 2013.[46] After making his return, McQuoid said making his return to the squad was a "nice surprise".[47]

At the end of the 2014–15 season, McQuoid was released by the club.[48] Following his release, manager Eddie Howe stated that McQuoid needed to "create a different path in his career."[49]

Loan spells

On 12 February 2014, McQuoid joined League One side Peterborough United on loan until the end of the season.[50] McQuoid made his debut two days later in a 0–0 draw against Walsall.[51] He scored his first goal for the club in the final of the Football League Trophy; a 3–1 win over Chesterfield that saw him awarded the first winner's medal of his career.[52] After the match, McQuoid said that playing and scoring at Wembley Stadium was something he had dreamed of doing since he was young.[53] McQuoid then scored his first league goal of the season in a 4–2 win over Shrewsbury Town on 26 April 2014.[54]

With his Bournemouth playing time remaining limited during the 2014–15 season, McQuoid followed team-mates Ryan Allsop and Mohamed Coulibaly in signing on a six-month loan for League One side Coventry City on 4 August 2014.[55] He made his Coventry debut in the opening game of the season, playing 90 minutes in a 3–2 win over Bradford City.[56] Two weeks later, McQuoid scored in a 2–2 draw against Barnsley.[57] He went on to score five goals in 19 games, with Coventry keen to extend his loan further.[58] However, McQuoid returned to his parent club on 9 January 2015.[59]

Luton Town

On 29 June 2015, McQuoid signed for League Two club Luton Town on a three-year contract.[60] He stated that he was pleased to have signed a long-term deal with the club, providing him with stability after spending his more recent seasons either injured or out on loan.[61]

International career

Born and raised in England, McQuoid is eligible to play for Northern Ireland due to his grandfather being born in Belfast.[62]

He was first called up by Northern Ireland U19 in March 2007, before even making a first-team appearance for Bournemouth.[63] McQuoid was then called up by Northern Ireland U21 on 8 November 2008.[64] McQuoid scored his first Northern Ireland U21 goals in a 3–1 win over Scotland U21.[65] In May 2009, McQuoid was called up by Northern Ireland B team for the match against Scotland B.[66]

He was called up to the senior Northern Ireland side for the first time for a friendly against Morocco in November 2010 and won a penalty in the dying stages of the match, converted by Rory Patterson to earn his side a draw.[67][68] He has since won four further caps for the senior team, all between 2010 and 2011.

Personal life

McQuoid was educated at Priestlands School, where he met his future Bournemouth team-mate, Sam Vokes.[69]
