The episodes of the first season of the anime series Naruto: Shippuden are directed by Hayato Date, and produced by Studio Pierrot and TV Tokyo. They are based on Part II of the Naruto manga series by Masashi Kishimoto.[1] The season is set two and a half years later, with Naruto Uzumaki and his team rescuing Gaara from the criminal organization Akatsuki. The episodes began airing on February 15, 2007 on TV Tokyo in Japan, and the first season finished on October 25, 2007.[2] The first season was released on DVD in Japan over eight discs between August 1, 2007 and March 5, 2008 under the name of Kazekage Rescue (風影奪還 Kazekage Dakkan).[3] There is also a special feature included with the seventh Naruto: Shippuden compilation DVD based on the second ending of the series called Hurricane! "Konoha Academy" Chronicles (疾風!"木ノ葉学園"伝 Shippū! "Konoha Gakuen" Den).[3]

On January 2, 2009 Viz Media and Crunchyroll began providing subtitled Naruto: Shippuden episodes.[4] Premiering on October 28, 2009 in Disney XD, the first season aired until April 21, 2010.[5] A series of eight DVDs of the season was released in North America between September 29, 2009 and April 6, 2010. The last volume also contained episodes from the second season.[6][7] Viz also collected the season in three DVD boxes between January 26, 2010 and August 3, 2010, also sharing the third volume with the second season.[8][9] In the United Kingdom, Manga Entertainment released it in three DVD volumes from June 14, 2010 to October 4, 2010,[10][11] while a DVD box containing the first 52 episodes was released on March 7, 2011.[12]

The series' first season used five musical themes: two openings and three endings. The first opening themes, "Hero's Come Back!!" by nobodyknows+, is used from episodes 1 to 30, while the second opening theme "Distance" by Long Shot Party, was used for episodes 31 and 32. The first ending theme, "Nagareboshi (Shooting Star)" (流れ星 〜Shooting Star〜) by Home Made Kazoku is used from episodes 1 to 18, the second ending theme, "Michi, To You All" (道 〜to you all) by Alüto is used from episodes 19 to 30. The third ending theme, "Kimi Monogatari" (キミモノガタリ, "Your Story") by Little by Little, is used for episodes 31 and 32. A featured movie, Naruto Shippuden the Movie, based on the Naruto: Shippuden series, was released on August 4, 2007.[13] The broadcast versions of episodes 24 through 27 included scenes from the movie in both the opening and ending themes, while still retaining the original music.

The episode begins with the preview of episode 51 with Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno and Sai reuniting with Sasuke Uchiha who seeks Naruto's power and suppress the Nine-tailed Fox within his subconscious. The first episode begins with Naruto returning home after two and a half years of training with Jiraiya, and seeing Sakura and Konohamaru. Tsunade assigns Naruto and Sakura on their first mission. 
2 "The Akatsuki Makes Its Move"
"Akatsuki, Shidō" (暁, 始動)

Learning that all of his friends were promoted to Chunin, Neji Hyuga as Jonin and Gaara as the Fifth Kazekage, Naruto gives a copy of Jiraiya's new book Make-Out Tactics to Kakashi Hatake, who challenges Naruto and Sakura for the bell retrieval test. Jiraiya converses with Kakashi about the Akatsuki searching for the Tailed Beasts and Gaara with the village council at the Sand Village, before Yura senses Sasori and Deidara arriving there to capture the One-Tailed Jinchuriki. 
3 "The Results of Training"

Unlike the first time with Sasuke, Naruto and Sakura fight with Kakashi with new skills. That night, Deidara infiltrates the village in the air and confronts Gaara. 
4 "The Jinchuriki of the Sand"

As Naruto and Sakura plan ahead to retrieve the bells from Kakashi, they realize that he did not read Make-Up Tactics, and force him to cover ears and eyes by revealing the book's ending about the younger ninja taking a bell. Meanwhile, Gaara fails to attack Deidara. 
5 "The Kazekage Stands Tall"
"Kazekage to shite...!" (風影として...!)

As Naruto and Sakura rest, Deidara frees himself after losing his arm and drops the C3 that nearly destroys the village. 
6 "Mission Cleared"
"Norumakuriā" (ノルマクリアー)

Gaara blocks the explosion with the sand and pulls it back outside, before Deidara uses exploding clay spiders to knock Gaara unconscious and captures him. 
7 "Run, Kankuro"
"Hashire Kankurō" (疾走れカンクロウ)

Leaving to chase Deidara and Sasori to the desert alone, Kankuro uses puppet techniques on the crow, black ant and salamander to challenge Sasori in the next day. The Sand Village delivers a message on hawk Takamaru for the Leaf. 
8 "Team Kakashi, Deployed"
"Shutsugeki, Kakashi-han" (出撃, カカシ班)

Kankuro fails to attack Sasori who uses his stinging tail to destroy his puppets and injures Kankuro with the three day poison, before Sasori declares that he created Kankuro's puppets and leaves. Meanwhile, Tsunade assigns Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi to rescue Gaara. 
9 "The Jinchuriki's Tears"
"Jinchūriki no Namida" (人柱力の涙)

As Naruto, Sakura, Kakashi and Temari move through the forest, the medics failed to find a cure. Baki sees Kankuro suffering in the hospital, and informs Chiyo and Ebizo about the Akatsuki. 
10 "Sealing Jutsu: Nine Phantom Dragons"
"Fūin Jutsu: Genryū Kyū Fūjin" (封印術·幻龍九封尽)

Deidara and Sasori arrive at the hideout cave, where the leader gathers with them. Using astral projection, they use the three-day long jutsu to extract and seal Shukaku from Gaara within the Gedo Statue. Tsunade assigns Team Guy to support the main team. The group arrive at the Sand Village, where they meet Chiyo who attacks Kakashi. 
11 "The Medical Ninja's Student"
"Iryō Ninja no Deshi" (医療忍者の弟子)

Kakashi reasons with Chiyo and Sakura removes the poison from Kankuro to create an antidote taught by Tsunade. Kankuro gives Sasori's torn mask cloth to Pakkun who senses it. Kankuro asks Naruto to save Gaara. 
12 "The Retired Granny's Determination"
"Inkyo Babā no Ketsui" (隠居ババアの決意)

The next day, Kakashi, Naruto, Sakura and Chiyo leave the Sand Village. Pakkun joins with and informs Team Guy about the cave in the Land of Rivers, while Chiyo tells them about the tailed beasts, two of which are sealed inside Gaara and Naruto. Zetsu notices that they arrive and informs the leader to send Itachi and Kisame to attack them. 
13 "A Meeting With Destiny"
"Innen Aimamieru" (因縁あいまみえる)

Team Guy fights with the fake Kisame and Team Kakashi confronts the fake Itachi. Despite Kakashi's warning, Itachi uses Mangekyo Sharingan on Naruto into confronting illusions. 
14 "Naruto's Growth"

Guy fails to steal Samehada and opens the sixth Inner Gate: Morning Peacock, while Lee, Neji and Tenten breaks free from the water bubbles. 
15 "The Secret Weapon is Called...."
"Kakushidama Nazukete" (隠し玉 名付けて...!)

Itachi uses shuriken inside the crows to immobilize Naruto, but Chiyo and Sakura free Naruto from Itachi's genjutsu. Naruto defeats Itachi who turns out to be Yura, while Team Guy identifies Mukade. They learn that Itachi and Kisame used the two to create clones to distract them. 
16 "The Secret of Jinchuriki"
"Jinchūriki no Himitsu" (人柱力の秘密)

Like Gaara and Naruto, Chiyo explains that the Jinchuriki always carry the Tailed Beasts within them and the extraction process can be fatal. As the council argue about Yura, the team rests for the night. 
17 "The Death of Gaara!"
"Gaara Shisu!" (我愛羅死す!)

After recalling her memory about Sasori and his parents, Chiyo tells the group that she sealed Shukaku to Gaara before arriving to the cave entrance. The Akatsuki finishes sealing Shukaku into the Gedo Statue and apparently kills Gaara. 
18 "Charge Tactic! Button Hook Entry!!"
"Totsunyū! Botan Fukku Entorī" (突入!ボタンフックエントリー)

The Akatsuki sends Deidara and Sasori to hold Gaara and attack the group. Team Kakashi and Guy sense the that five forbidden tags control the barrier on the cave. Together, they pinpoint and remove the tags to disable the barrier, and Sakura destroys the rock before confronting Deidara and Sasori. 
19 "Traps Activate! Team Guy's Enemy"
"Torappu Sadō! Gai-han no Teki" (罠作動!ガイ班の敵)

As Team Guy confronts to fight their clones. While chasing Deidara with Kakashi, Naruto angrily asks Deidara to give Gaara back. Sakura learns that Sasori is Chiyo's grandson. 
20 "Hiruko vs. Two Kunoichi!"
"Hiruko vs. Futari no Kunoichi" (ヒルコVS二人の女忍者)

Chiyo tells Sakura that Sasori is the best human puppeteer who betrayed them and left the Sand Village. Sensing the real Sasori inside his scorpion puppet Hiruko, Chiyo and Sakura dodge stinging attacks and demolish Hiruko, before Sasori emerges. Deidara sees Naruto's fox chakra activating. 
21 "Sasori's Real Face"
"Sasori no Sugao" (サソリの素顔)

Sasori tells Chiyo and Sakura that he left the village over twenty years ago. Meanwhile, while arriving to the Land of Rivers, Ebizo tells the sand villagers about the Third Kazekage. Sasori summons the fake Third Kazekage, whom he kidnapped and created him as a human puppet many years ago, and injures Sakura with the cloud of poison gas. 
22 "Chiyo's Secret Skills"
"Chiyo no Oku no Te" (チヨの奥の手)

As Sakura uses an explosive scroll to escape, Chiyo summons the puppet versions of Sasori's late parents that he modeled the real ones out when he was a child. Chiyo and Sakura hold down the Kazekage, but Sasori releases his secret technique: Iron Sand. Later, Team Guy exhaust themselves from fighting the clones, while Naruto and Kakashi avoid Deidara's clay bombs. 
23 "Father and Mother"

Using Sasori's parents to protect Sakura from the Third Kazekage's Iron Sand, Chiyo reprimands Sasori for creating the puppet versions of his parents to fake love and uses chakra threads on Sakura into dodging the sands near Sasori. 
24 "The Third Kazekage"
"Sandaime Kazekage" (三代目風影)

Sakura fends off Sasori's Iron Sand pyramid and prism that destroys the top of the cave. Sasori creates a large make shifting poisonous iron spikes and paralyzes Sakura, who punches the Third Kazekage puppet into pieces. 
25 "Three Minutes Between Life and Death"
"Sei to Shi no Sanpunkan" (生と死の三分間)

As Sakura tells Sasori that she created and brought the plant antidote, Naruto and Kakashi evade Deidara's explosive swarm of jumping crickets, while making a plan. Sasori tells Sakura and Chiyo that he transformed himself into a human puppet. 
26 "Puppet Fight: 10 vs. 100!"
"Jukki vs Hyakki" (十機vs百機)

As Chiyo summons Ten Puppets of Chikamatsu and Sasori with One Hundred Puppet Manipulation, both puppet controllers fight until Sasori inflicts the poison on Sakura who throws the Lion-Headed Kannon on Sasori whose heart transfers from his body to another. 
27 "Impossible Dream"
"Kanawanu Yume" (叶わぬ夢)

Chiyo injects the antidote on the injured Sakura and Sasori's parental puppets stab through his heart, apparently killing him. Sasori tells Sakura that he planned to meet with Kabuto and Orochimaru who turned against the Akatsuki, before Chiyo recovers Sakura. Kakashi and Naruto sets the plan against Deidara. 
28 "Beasts: Alive Again!"
"Yomigaeru Kemono-tachi" (蘇る獣たち)

Team Guy plans ahead and successfully destroy their clones. 
29 "Kakashi Enlightened!"

Kakashi destroys Deidara's arm with Mangekyo Sharingan: Kamui. After beheading the clay bird with the Rasengan and sees Gaara, Naruto angrily attacks Deidara and accidentally uses his fox chakra, causing him to transform into the beast with two tails. 
30 "Aesthetics of an Instant"
"Shunkan no Bigaku" (瞬間の美学)

Kakashi seals the fox chakra inside Naruto with the tag that Jiraiya gave to suppress. Team Guy attacks Deidara who apparently self-detonates himself by ingesting his own clay that Kakashi's Kamui countered and warp himself and others to safety. Naruto and friends seemingly mourn for Gaara. However, Chiyo uses her Life-Transfer Jutsu on Gaara. 
31 "The Legacy"
"Tsugareyukumono" (継がれゆくもの)

Just before Chiyo dies, she tells Naruto that the leaf and sand villagers learned in the past and the wisdom of future. A revived Gaara sees all of the surrounding sand ninjas celebrating. Kankuro tells Naruto that Chiyo died saving Gaara and the sand villagers mourn for Chiyo. 
32 "Return of the Kazekage"
"Kazekage no Kikan" (風影の帰還)

The real Deidara survives to recover his arm, and meets Zetsu and the masked Tobi who keeps Sasori's ring and joins wuth the Akatsuki. Meanwhile as the sand villagers pay their final respect for Chiyo, Team Kakashi and Guy return home to the Leaf Village, where an elderly ninja asks Sai to join up with Team Kakashi.
