Marxism: An Historical and Critical Study is a 1961 book by George Lichtheim, in which Lichtheim provides a study of the development of Marxism from its origins to 1917.[1] It has been seen as a classic discussion of the subject, though it has received some criticism.
Scholarly reception
Political scientist David McLellan praised Marxism: An Historical and Critical Study in the 1995 edition of his Karl Marx: His Life and Thought.[1] Political theorist Terrell Carver has identified Lichtheim's work as a classic.[2] Historian of science Roger Smith writes that "though sometimes criticized in detail", the work is "helpful in locating Marx in the left political movements of the nineteenth century".[3]
