Overview

The plantation and commodities sector, comprising oil palm, rubber, timber, cocoa, pepper and tobacco has contributed significantly to the country’s economic development for the past 50 years. Since then, the sector has become one of Malaysia’s major exports earnings. Exports values of these commodities and commodity based products in 2012 was RM 127.5 billion, constituted 18.2 per cent of total export earnings.

The remunerative price of commodities throughout 2012 has benefited the country, in particular the smallholders. The future of plantation industries and commodities sector remains bright and promises a lot of opportunities.

To make Malaysia the centre of excellence for the commodity sector and as a major producer of higher value-added commodity-based products in the global markets.

Policy Formulation

To formulate clear policies and strategies for the plantation commodities industry based on current developments and needs within the following timeframes:

Drafting of Legislation

To draft principal and subsidiary legislation related to the plantation and commodities industry based on current developments and needs within the following timeframes:

The drafts of the principal/subsidiary legislation are forwarded to the Drafting Division, Attorney General’s Chambers once the policy issues are resolved.

Development Projects

To ensure that development programmes in the agricultural and commodities sectors are planned, implemented and monitored accordingly, and to hold 12 Development Action Committee (JTPK) meetings a year.

Consultation Sessions

To hold consultation sessions with state governments, the industry players and non-governmental organisations (NGO):

Trade Missions

To organise trade and market enhancement missions / working visits to strengthen the existing market and explore new markets at least five (5) times a year and to take the appropriate follow-up actions.

Statistics Book on Commodities

To publish the Statistics Book on Commodities annually and distribute it in April of the following year.

Annual Report Book

To publish the MPIC Annual Report book yearly and distribute it in June of the following year.

Organise MICCOS

To organise the Malaysia International Commodity Conference and Showcase (MICCOS) every two (2) years.
