The Naval Academy Research Institute (in French : Institut de recherche de l’École navale), also known as IRENav, is a French research institute under the authority of Arts et Métiers ParisTech and the Navy School (École Navale).[1] The institute is part of the Carnot Institute ARTS and currently employs more than 70 persons. It is also involved in the scientific group "Europôle mer".
Teaching and research topics
The main part of the research is focused on the following lines :
- Energy and fluid dynamics
- Acoustics and submarine transmissions
Research teams
The institute is divided in two research teams, which have their own field of research :
- M2EN (Mechanics and energy in marine environment)
- MoTIM (Maritime information modeling and processing)
Projects
In association with DCNS, the institute has been developing new marine turbines since 2011. The IRENav teams also study ways of improvement for the sails efficiency.[2]
Facilities and equipment
IRENav is mainly equipped to study turbulent flows, including a cavitation tunnel, an hydrodynamic test loop and other apparatuses such as towed and embedded Sonars.
