Nikolaus, Hereditary Grand Duke of Oldenburg (German: Nikolaus Friedrich Wilhelm von Holstein-Gottorp, Erbgroßherzog von Oldenburg; 10 August 1897 – 3 April 1970) was the eldest son of Frederick Augustus II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg, who was the last ruling Grand Duke of Oldenburg.
In 1931, Nikolaus succeeded to his father's titles and assumed the role of pretender to the Grand Duchy, until his death in 1970.
Early life
Nikolaus was born at Oldenburg, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg, the third child and first son of Frederick Augustus II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg (1852–1931), (son of Peter II, Grand Duke of Oldenburg and Princess Elisabeth of Saxe-Altenburg) and his wife, Duchess Elisabeth Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1869–1955), (daughter of Frederick Francis II, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Princess Marie of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt).
He was a first cousin of Queen Juliana of the Netherlands and with his wife and other family members was a guest at her 1937 wedding to Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld.[1]
Marriage
Nikolaus married on 26 October 1921 in Arolsen to Princess Helena of Waldeck and Pyrmont (1899–1948), only daughter of Friedrich, Prince of Waldeck and Pyrmont and his wife, Princess Bathildis of Schaumburg-Lippe.[2]
They had nine children:
- Anton-Günther, Duke of Oldenburg (16 January 1923 – 20 September 2014) he married Princess Ameli of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg on 7 August 1951. They have two children and four grandchildren.
- Duchess Rixa a Elisabeth Bathildis Enna Cecilie of Oldenburg (28 March 1924 – 1 April 1939) she died at the age of fifteen after she fell off her horse.
- Duke Peter Friedrich August Max of Oldenburg (7 August 1926 - 18 November 2016) he married Princess Gertrud of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg (24 Jan 1926-4 Feb 2011; sister of Princess Ameli of Löwenstein-Wertheim-Freudenberg) on 7 August 1951. They have four children:
- Duke Friedrich August Nicholas Udo Peter Philip of Oldenburg (26 September 1952) he married Belinda Warter on 22 December 1981. They have three daughters:
- Duchess Anastasia Caroline Margarete Adelheid of Oldenburg (10 October 1982)
- Duchess Alice Johanna Helene Susannah of Oldenburg (15 April 1986)
- Duchess Cara Emma Amanda Bettina of Oldenburg (14 June 1993)
- Duchess Margarete Elisabeth Bathildis Ameli Eilika Barbara Marie-Alix Altburg of Oldenburg (16 May 1954) she married Prince Philipp of Croÿ (descendant of Anne Emmanuel de Croÿ) on 27 June 1985. They have three children:
- Prince Alexander Friedrich-August Albrecht Ernst of Croÿ (6 March 1987)
- Prince Maximilian Johannes Alexander Englebert of Croÿ (31 May 1988)
- Princess Rosalie Franziska Carolyn Marie-Eugenie of Croÿ (23 October 1990)
- Duke Nikolaus Anton-Günther Max Johann Alfred Ernst of Oldenburg (21 May 1955) he married Anna Dyckerhoff on 19 June 1982. They have three sons:

- Duke Friedrich August Nicholas Udo Peter Philip of Oldenburg (26 September 1952) he married Belinda Warter on 22 December 1981. They have three daughters:
- Duchess Eilika Stephanie Elisabeth Thekla Juliana of Oldenburg (2 February 1928—26 January 2016) she was a bridesmaid at the 1937 wedding of Juliana of the Netherlands with Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld.[1] She married Emich, 7th Prince of Leiningen on 10 August 1950. They have four children and six grandchildren.
- Duke Egilmar Friedrich Franz Stephan Wilhelm of Oldenburg (14 October 1934)
- Duke Friedrich August of Oldenburg (11 January 1936) he married Princess Marie Cécile of Prussia on 4 December 1965 and they were divorced on 23 November 1989. They have three children and seven grandchildren. He remarried Countess Donata of Castell-Rüdenhausen on 9 February 1991
- Duchess Altburg Elisabeth Hilda Ingeborg Marie Luise Mathilde of Oldenburg (14 October 1938) she married Baron Rüdiger von Erffa on 8 July 1967. They have five sons and twelve grandchildren:
- Baron Mattias Nikolaus Huno Burkhart Hartmann von Erffa (20 December 1968) he married Baroness Alexandra von Mirbach on 1 November 1997. They have four children:

His wife died in 1948, he married secondly on 20 September 1950 in Güldenstein to Anne-Marie von Schutzbar gennant Milchling (1903–1991), daughter of Rudolf von Schutzbar gen. Milchling and Rose Marston.[2] They had no children.
