This was also GE's first investment into a renewable energy project in India.[13][14] In May 2014, the company commissioned a 19 MW solar power project in Chitradurga district of Karnataka.[15][16] Together with the Maharashtra State Power Generation Company WEL has developed a 50 MW solar power plant at Baramati in Pune district.[17] In August 2015, the company commissioned a 34-MW solar project in Bhatinda district of Punjab.[18] The company aims to develop a total of 550 MW solar capacities in Karnataka, 100 MW in Andhra Pradesh, and 150 MW in Punjab.[19][20]
Welspun Energy aims to develop 1,000 MW of wind power projects by 2014.[21] Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka are focus states for the company's wind projects. In Karnataka Welspun has signed agreements for developing two wind projects of 750 MW and 100 MW.[22] In Rajasthan the company aims to develop a capacity of over 300 MW. A memorandum of understanding is signed with the Government of Andhra Pradesh to develop 500 MW wind capacity.[23]
In June 2014, Asian Development Bank made a US$50 million equity investment into Welspun Renewables, the largest direct equity investment in the renewable energy sector by ADB. [24][25][26]
