The Lai Châu Dam is a hydroelectric dam on the Black River under-construction in Nậm Hàng commune, Mường Tè District, Vietnam. Construction started on 5 January 2011 and it is expected to be operational by 2017 with the first turbine put into operation in 2016.[1][2] The ground clearance works and relocation of people was completed by September 2010.[3] The owner of the power station is Vietnam Electricity.
Dam was designed by Hydroproject, a Russian hydrotechnical design firm.[4] The power station will have three Francis turbines with a capacity of 400 MW each. Turbines will be manufactured at the Alstom's plant in Tianjin, China.[5][6] The total capacity of the station will be 1,200 MW. When constructed, it will be the third largest hydroelectric power station in Vietnam.[1][2][5] It is expected to cost US$1.8 billion.[7]
