Mondi plc is an international packaging and paper group employing over 24,400 people with 102 operations across more than 30 countries, predominantly in central Europe, Russia and South Africa. It is fully integrated across the packaging and paper value chain – from the growing of wood and the manufacture of pulp and paper (packaging paper and uncoated fine paper), to the conversion of packaging papers into corrugated packaging, industrial bags, extrusion coatings and release liner. It has listings on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index.

History

Mondi has its roots in South Africa where, in 1967, the company's former owner, Anglo American plc, built the Merebank Mill in Durban.[3]

In 2000 the company increased its holdings in Neusiedler AG and Frantschach AG, both Austrian businesses, to 100% and 70% respectively.[4] Also in 2000 it acquired Cofinec, another Polish business.[4] It increased its holding in the Syktyvkar Mill in the Komi Republic to 90% in 2002.[5] In 2004 it further increased its holdings in Frantschach AG, one of its Austrian businesses, to 100% and in Celuloza Świecie AG, another Polish business, to 71%.[4]

On 2 July 2007 the Company demerged from its former parent company Anglo American plc, and became a dual-listed company, with a primary listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and a premium listing on the London Stock Exchange.[6]

In 2012 Mondi acquired Nordenia to extend its consumer packaging business.[7]

Operations

Mondi operates in two divisions: Europe & International and South Africa:[8]

Mondi Europe & International

Mondi Europe & International is a division of the Mondi Group. It specializes in containerboard, kraft paper, corrugated packaging, industrial bags, extrusion coatings, release liner, consumer goods packaging, advanced films and hygiene products components, office and digital printing as well as offset paper. It is organized into four business units: Packaging Paper, Fibre Packaging, Consumer Packaging and Uncoated Fine Paper. In Austria, Mondi has nine production facilities. The head office in Vienna is also the headquarters of the Europe & International division.

Mondi South Africa

Mondi's South Africa division manages over 305, 952 hectares of plantations and manufactures woodchips, pulp, containerboard, uncoated fine paper and newsprint. In addition to the South Africa division, Mondi also owns 54% of Mondi Shanduka Newsprint.

Products

Containerboard, both virgin and recycled, and corrugated packaging solutions (shelf-ready and heavy-duty packaging, trays and boxes) are used for diverse industrial applications including the food sector. Mondi converts kraft paper into bags and specialty products for rugged industrial applications. These bags are compatible with high-speed filling and used primarily in the cement and construction industries. Bags and microwaveable packaging are produced of film-based flexible packaging. Special technologies, such as extrusion coatings, laminating, siliconising and printing facilitate some processes.[9]

Sustainability

The company participates in the survey of Ethical Investment and is represented in the following indices: FTSE4Good Index, the JSE Socially Responsible Investment,[10] the FTSE350 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index [11] and the FTSE350 Carbon Performance Leadership Index.[11]

The company is a signatory and advocate of the Global Compact, a UN initiative for business committed to universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption.[12]

In 2012, all owned, leased and managed forests in Russia and South Africa retained Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification and sixty five percent of all timber is source from FSC CoC-Certified materials.[13]

Practically all the company's paper products are fundamentally sustainable; consisting of natural fibres and produced with renewable resources, they are compatible with recovery and recycling regimes. Standardized parameters are applied to monitor the environmental impact of the production processes. Mondi defined its product responsibility on the basis of the UNEP Life Cycle Initiative.[14]
