Zheng Shuang (born 22 August 1991) is a Chinese actress and singer. She graduated from the Beijing Film Academy in 2011. Zheng is regarded as one of the "Four Dan actresses of the post-90s Generation" (Chinese: 90后四小花旦), along with Zhou Dongyu, Guan Xiaotong and Yang Zi. Following her success in 2015, Zheng is currently one of the highest paid Chinese TV actresses.[1]
Zheng is best known for roles in Meteor Shower (2009), Meteor Shower II (2010), Mural (2011), Swords of Legends (2014), Love Weaves Through a Millennium (2015), Chronicle of Life and Just One Smile Is Very Alluring (2016).
Career
Beginnings and Rise to Fame: Meteor Shower, Mural
In 2008, Zheng Shuang won the "Outstanding Student Scholarship" award by the Beijing Film Academy. She then played the lead role in the stage play Me and Jiang Sister, which won the Best Directing award. The same year, she starred in Home as the female lead, a stage play reported in the second season of Beijing Film Academy. Zheng also auditioned for the role of the female lead in the Chinese adaptation of Meteor Garden by Hunan TV, and successfully got the role. The adaptation was titled Meteor Shower.
With the role of Chu Yuxun in Meteor Shower, Zheng rose to fame in China. The drama achieved an average rating of 1.9, and ranked first in its time slot nationally. Zheng also made her singing debut for the OST of the drama, releasing a single titled "Love Waltz". She reprised her role in the sequel, Meteor Shower II in 2010, which broke the ratings record established by its predecessor. Zheng was nominated as Best Actress at the 25th China TV Golden Eagle Award, becoming the youngest actress to be nominated.
In 2011, she starred in Chen Kaige's ancient fantasy movie Mural, which gained her more recognition. She received Best New Actress nominations at the 31st Hong Kong Film Awards and Hong Kong Film Directors' Guild Award. The same year, she starred in the action film No Limit alongside her Meteor Shower co-star Hans Zhang.
Zheng continued appearing in various dramas over the years. She portrayed the illustrious Princess Taiping in historical drama Secret History of Empress Wu, and acted in the idol palace drama War of Desire. She again played Princess Taiping in Secret History of Princess Taiping. In 2013, she starred in contemporary romance drama The Queen of SOP 2, the sequel to the 2012 hit drama.
Rising Popularity
Zheng became increasingly popular when she starred in the xianxia drama Swords of Legends, portraying the bright and adorable fox-turned human Xiang Ling. She won Audience's Favourite Actress at the 13th Huading Awards. The same year, she reunited with her Swords of Legends co-star Ma Tianyu in the historical drama Beauty Private Kitchens.
In 2015, Zheng starred in republican series The Cage of Love, penned by famed writer Tong Hua. Her performance won her the Huading Awards for Best Actress in the modern genre. She then starred in the television series Love Weaves Through a Millennium, based on the Korean time-travel series Queen In-hyun's Man. In the same year, Zheng became a cast member of the popular travel reality show Divas Hit the Road (II).
With the rise of her popularity due to her appearances in trendy dramas and variety programs, Zheng became one of the highest paid television actresses in the industry.[2]
In 2016, Zheng reunited with The Cage of Love co-star Hawick Lau in Chronicle of Life, based on the period political romance novel Lonely Courtyard in Late Spring by Fei Wo Si Cun. The series gained huge popularity upon its premiere, placing #1 in ratings nationally for 16 days. In the same month, she starred in The Three Heroes and Five Gallants , adapted from the 19th century classic novel of the same name. She then began filming for Jade Lovers alongside Korean actor Lee Jong-suk, marking her first Korean-Chinese collaboration.
On February 15, upon expiration of her contract with Tianyu Media, Zheng announced that she will be setting up her personal studio to manage her activities.
Following the set up of her studio, she starred in Just One Smile Is Very Alluring, a youth idol drama based on the popular college age romance novel of the same name by Gu Man. Upon release, it became a hot-issued topic, gaining a large number of views in a short time as well as attention from media outlets. Zheng also received praises for her portrayal of the female protagonist Bei Wei Wei.
In August, she started filming for youth romance series Rush to the Dead Summer, based on the novel of the same name written by Guo Jingming.
